re-re Javelin electronics suggestion

Post by Crestwood23 »

Hi, I am excited to build my new re-re Javelin, but am a little confused about the "best" choice for motor and electronics. I already own 7.2V NiMH batteries and a charger, so I'd like to stick with that. I think I want a Kyosho Lemans 240s motor just because they look so cool and match the car. Some questions:
Do I want the 15.5T or the gold 13.5T?
Brushed or brushless?
What will work best with the stock gears of the car?
I see Kyosho also offers a shiny ESC but its big $. Could I splurge for the Kyosho motor and then go cheap on the ESC? If so, which one?
Finally, any steering servo recommendations for this setup?
Thanks!

15.5T will run slower in terms of RPM but with more torque than a 13.5T. And at the end you need proper gearing for your motor (hint : if the motor is well geared, it doesn't heat up. If it heats up, that means your are running a too long ratio so reduce the number of teeth of your motor pinion).
The manual of the motor should indicate the proper gearing ratio to use as a basis, then you will have to adapt for each track.
And for what it is worth, I run a brushless 13.5T motor in my Javelin and a brushless 10.5T in my Turbo Optima. In both case, you are likely to need the optional OTW126 spur gear for proper gearing.
Have a look at my own Javelin thread for more details.
I buy kits to build and ru(i)n them :-)

Thanks for the reply - and nice build thread! I definitely want the car to be fast, do you think 13.5 or 10.5 would be better? I would pair this with the OTW126 as you recommend. I see you used a Performa Racing P1 ESC as it is close the Kyosho ESC - looks like a great option. Do you run NiMH or Lipo?

I run Lipos with all my cars (they are able to provide much more power than the NiMH). The Performa P1 ESC is no longer available anywhere nowadays (it was a good option at that time). 10.5T would definitely achieve more speed, but you would probably need to consider the sway bars option (OTW102) : Javelin gravity center is higher than the Turbo Optima, and even with the 13.5T it tends to lean more than an Optima, and it would be even worse with more speed, I believe.

This video shows how I mounted my electronics into the Javelin.
