Vintage Truck Tires , how well do these match ?

Post by Chrominator »

On my RC10T restoration, the original front tires are still in decent shape, but the rears were totally bald.

I looked at the picture on the box and then in the manual and noticed that the rear tires are different.

On the box, they look like a spike , and in the manual they look more like a pin, which did most of the trucks come with ?

I had a brand new pair of Losi 2.2 step pin tires , I mounted them on the original 2.0 rims , they fit on the rims OK , but there profile was much taller, as you can see in the picture with 3 tires and wheels .

So any way I was at a LHS. today , and I stumble on to these Traxxas low-profile spiked tires , and thought they looked a lot like the tires on the box, what do you think ?

They fit prefect on the original 2.0 wheels , and they look to me like there profile match's the original front tires pretty good.

The only thing that kinda sucks is they say Traxxas on both sides.

Does anyone have any good pictures of both styles of tires, my manual is a copy and is hard to see what they really look like, the box picture is a lot better but still not best.

Hi my name is Mike and I'm a Chromaholic, my wheels have been chrome free for over a year, thanks to everyone that made fun of them.

The older I get , the faster I was.

The pins in the photos were prolines. They didn'thave production tires when they shot the pics for othe manual and static shots for the box art so they used those as that was what was used on Cliffs truck. The ONLY rears that came with the truck originally were the spikes similar to what you found.

The main difference between the ones you found and the orig tires is that the two rows down the middle of the tire were blades not spikes where your traxxas ones are all spikes.

As far as the Traxxas logos on the sidewalls.. depending how crazy you want to get you could sand them down to be flat and then use some armor-all or somethign to even out the coloration of the tire. just don't use a dremel..you'll never get it flat and even.

I'm not too sure about you having 2.0 truck wheels, to the best of my knowledge all Associated truck wheels were 2.2

I thought the original truck wheels were considered smaller than then modern wheels, the old wheels measure about 1mm smaller in diameter than my new wheels.

But the overall tire diameter is quite a bit more, as you can see in the picture, the fronts are closer than the rears.

I think what is being said here is that the inner diameter is 2.2 for both types of tires, but the outer diameter on the newer tires are larger than the older ones.

I'm doing a restoration on a couple of 10Ts and I have both the Associated and Proline versions of the tires. I had to take a closer look because both sets of older tires were definately smaller (in outside diameter) than the newer tires.
