Running Truck tires on a B4.2?

Post by Legio10 »

Woking on a winter project being a B4.2. Looking to make it primarily into a "basher' for the back yard and gravel pit. I would like to get a bit more ground clearance by using some 2.2 truck tires and wheels. For anyone who has done this will I need to change out the rear and/or front axels to accommodate the wider rims? I would think the rears will clear but wondering if I need truck or short course front axels. Car has the 12mm hex conversion already. Thanks for the help in advance. I might also convert the the dog bones to a CVA kit if I need to switch out the rear axels.

I just mounted a set of short course rims to my B4.2 (12mm hexes all the way around). The front bolt right on and clear the front arm at full lock in both directions. In the rear you will need the fatter hex from the SC10. The thinner hex on the buggy leaves some shoulder from the axle and the tire will not bolt down tight. You can see the difference in thickness in the below links.

In my opinion, using short course tires front and rear is the cheapest/easiest option. If you search "short course 12mm" on ebay, you can find 4 tires and rims for ~$25. I have purchased a set of these in the past and they are great for bashing.

Tamlok, thanks for the info. Thats exactly what I was looking for! I see what you are talking about by the spacing. On the short course rims I’m guessing I need the 3mm offset rims? I’m putting together a parts list for an order tomorrow. Figured I would service the trans and shocks while I was at it. Any need to change out the springs and oil weight with the larger tires?

Not sure on the offset, the rims I mounted were not Associated (think they were advertised as fitting Traxxas). Looking at similar items that I purchased on ebay states the offset is 6mm. I can's speak to shocks and oil, I literally just mounted the tires, did not run it.
