I don't want to hi jack your thread but it's these.

This thread is dedicated to anyone needing on-road foam tires. I'd be glad to see someone get something out of this too, feel free to post in here like it's yours.

Your See's wheels are exactly what I would want for an RC10L, those look great! The width of your rear tires being almost 2" seems like that would be the tough donuts to find, the front donuts at 2" x 1.1" are very easy to find.

Which donuts do you currently have, that you're thinking about trying?

The 3M Weatherstrip adhesive says it can take 24 hours to cure at 70°, got about 2 more hours to go on these.

Can anyone guess which was the first one I tried to glue?

Hopefully the tyre file will knock that glue mess off of there. Learning the hard way has its merits too.

The containment box -

worked pretty well outdoors - this is not an indoors project (garage maybe).
Image

The CRC Tyre File is a must have for this task.

The CRC Tyre Truer V3 is really impressive, accurate and with solid repeatable results.
Image

Image

These Bolink wheels were ruined, all of them had the most ridiculous shelf dents in them and were completely unusable - until now. Now they're all the same diameter and trued again.
Image

Working up the courage to start on TDP wheels, there was no pressure with the Bolink wheels, but these front Purple donuts aren't easy to find, can't mess those up.

I won't waste time posting pics and part numbers of most of what didn't fit but it was various Jaco, TRC, BSR, Windtunnel RC. What I learned is most 1/10th pan car donuts are 40mm or 45mm ID and don't fit, the BBS style wheels are 1.95" (50mm).

I did find a very useful resource today... a 1991 TRC catalog on Ebay - fortunate that the seller uploaded images of most pages at a decent resolution (see attached). I can now say that the Sees 1/10th pan car BBS wheels are the same dimensions as the TRC 1/10th pan car BBS wheels, hence fit the same size tire. The official OD of the wheel is 1.95". I do not know if there are other 1/10th pan wheels this size (Corally, Bolink, etc..) . My findings so far:

Rear
This one is difficult because of the ID of the donut. You can shave the OD but you can't do anything about the ID so it limits the options. The only good options I found so far are from TRC:

TRC donuts for BBS Wheels
TRC #1010, 1011, 1012, 1014

TRC Pre-trued donuts for BBS Wheels
TRC #1020, 1021, 1022

TRC Pre-mounted tires on BBS Wheels
TRC #1030, 1031, 1032, 1034, 1037

TRC Pre-mounted tires on Composite BBS Wheels
TRC #1031C, 1032C

I tried stretching a few other donuts onto the BBS rims and it doesn't work. In particular, I removed a few sets of these BSR foams using acetone and squeezed onto the rims. They are 45mm ID and they cracked shortly after. Fail.
BSR_on_BBS.jpg
I found some of the old TRC donuts and plan to try them when I get a truer.

Front
This gets interesting. There are the official TRC donuts that fit the front BBS just like the rear:

TRC donuts for BBS Wheels
TRC #910, 911, 912, 913, 914

TRC Pre-trued donuts for BBS Wheels
TRC #920, 921, 922, 923, 924, 927

TRC Pre-mounted tires on BBS Wheels
TRC #930, 931, 932, 933, 934, 937

TRC Pre-mounted tires on Composite BBS Wheels
TRC #930C, 931C

But, I found many modern touring car wheels are roughly 50mm x 27mm which should be perfect. I found this by accident when going through my tires one day. I just happened to look at the Contact RC tires I had and said hang on a minute! After countless hours searching for old tires I have these things sitting in my tire bins the whole time.
contact_donut.jpg
I plan to dismount a pair to try out. I also found Contact RC has donuts that are apparently 48mm ID (Part # JY35) so I bought a set of those to try as well. https://www.ebay.com/itm/405063853489

Found your See's wheels on worthpoint.com, these tires are not what I was expecting to see.

Here's a Worthpoint auction that claims the TRC #922 are another option for BBS wheels:

I see that you bought a pair of 48mm donuts for the fronts, looking forward to hearing how those work for you.

It makes sense the TRC #922 are another option. It doesn't show up in the '91 catalog but if they offered other years by their part # conventions 922 would be pre-trued orange donuts for BBS front.

Thanks for the motivation w/ this newfound info today I bought a few sets of the TRC pre-trued rears - I actually had them in my eBay watchlist for over a year. I was so beaten down and trigger shy from wasting money on them the last several years and wouldn't buy anything until 100% sure. I got lucky, might be able to just slip them on. For the fronts I'm going to try the Contact RC donuts and also removing the foams from a set of TRC BBS and Contact RC.

The TRC green dot set I bought in error, and listed earlier in this thread, measures a 1.89" inner diameter, or 48mm.

TRC 48mm ID donuts next to 40mm ID Jaco donuts:

The ones you have ordered should do it. Definitely let us know how it goes.

Couldn't bring myself to cut TDP vette donuts today.
Image

Have to narrow the fronts considerably, and these are the Purple dot hard to come by ones.

Will do this tomorrow.

Glued and trued, this project is now completed.

Made both the front and rear 60mm outer diameter. Not sure if I'll add the ribs in the front wheels, that seems to make them split easier.

I want to put foam tires on all of my street runners, cheap and easy to keep them looking new now.

looks great. It's so hard to finish a project. In fact, I don't think I've finished any, including ones that are just dusting up and making my old cars pretty.

I remember the Dead Pool article in RCCA, and then had to wait months for it to come out in theaters and then on VHS. I rented it and copied it and watched it so many times. I was kind of embarrassed for some reason and would only watch the RC10 parts alone. The part where the bad guy goes into radio shack is awesome.

We had nowhere to see RC cars where I grew up in MA. Besides Dead Pool I remember one time they showed 1/10th off-road on ESPN late one night! Ended up going to school in Los Angeles and never left, now I'm 30 miles or less from just about everything that went on in the late 80's and early 90's... Team Associated, Novak, RC Thunderdrome (velodrome), Ranch Pit Shop, RCRC, Race Prep, SoCal Raceway and countless RC parts manufacturing companies, but most of it is gone for long time ;(

Thanks! Long way to go still on finishing the body and mounting it with proper clearances, that's a job that could take longer than anything; don't want to leave it looking incorrect, or poorly done.

I was 15 when The Dead Pool movie was released, and it was rated R, so all I saw was the Trailer that was on TV back then:

Huge fan of classic cars in general, but that movie and those scenes from the trailer are what made the biggest impression on me, wanted to build an RC car, and put any body of my choice on it someday. That's the reason I bought my RC10 CE in '96 and put a Bolink '32 Ford body on it, then a RC10GT in '97 with a Parma Chevy Nomad wagon body on it.

I finally saw The Dead Pool entire movie, many years later, and it was the last and worst of the Dirty Harry series, but still so great for different reasons. The young Jim Carrey trying to be serious, makes me laugh. The corny scene where Slash and the band members from Guns N' Roses are shooting a harpoon through a glass window. A very not great movie, but a cult classic, and those RC car scenes were just epic for the time - that entire chase scene is still so good!

There are no good tracks up here in East Bay, CA, San Jose is as close and good as it gets, but an hour away. An unused tennis court would make a great spot for on-road track, might be time to find one.

Keep us posted on your RC10L/BBS/See's donut quest, looking forward to seeing you nail those down!

Really appreciate that, and, none of this would've been possible for me, or anywhere this close to accurate to the movie car wheels, without your original Advance Eng. rim pics and measurements - much thanks again for those!

Jimmy at Dhawk then translated those imperial measurements to metric, and made this happen!

I have (2) more NOS Jaco Green dot donut sets to install on the second TDP rim set.
Image

My first attempt at the glue and true process is pretty bad, glue missing from where it should be - glue where it shouldn't be. I want to do the second set as cleanly as I possibly can. If I get it right I'll share my method, and if I blow it I'll share that of course too, as a cautionary tale.

I'm looking for another Pro-Line Jaco set for the front wheels, Purple and Pink dot are high traction asphalt, would like to find those, want to have a spare Green dot set for rears and not use those in front.

Will be back at some point with another round, and hopefully better results next time.

The problem with foams is that if you try to push the rim in the foam with wet glue it just pushes the glue out.

Use contact adhesive and coat the inner surface of the foam and the outer surface of the rim. Let it dry until it it is just slightly tacky to the touch. Use your finger or a brush to then generously coat the contact with turpentine. Quickly push the rim into the foam and let dry fully. You'll have perfectly glued foams.

Keep in mind you only get one shot to push the rim in the foam. I normally place the nicest edge of the foam donut down on a piece of glass or something and press the outside face of the rim fully into the foam. This ensures the foam is flush with the edge of the rim and that the foam spins true.

If the rims have a big outside lip like that I would probably set the rim face down and push the nice side of the foam onto the rim, but use something flat to push it on evenly

On carpet and wood floors we always used Paragon traction compound on the foam tires. I don't remember if that was also done on asphalt and concrete. It did make a huge traction difference on indoor surfaces.
