Allen key sizes

Post by graemevw »

Im not too used to imperial sizes and have found a few screws i dont have allen keys for.
Can anyone tell me what allen key sizes are used on old rc10s?
The ones i have trouble with are the tiny screws that hold the bearings in the idlers, the screws that hold the drive gears/outdrives on and the set screws that clamp the front shock rods in the front arms.
Thanks.

The tiny set screws in the idler gears were the most troublesome for me. They are 0.035”, which is all but impossible to find here. Luckily, however, 0.035” is equivalent to 0.9mm. I have seen Allen keys sold online as both metric and inches in this size.
That’s the size your looking for.
The rest are all standard fractional inch sizes which I can check for you, but a typical set of inch Allen keys will have them, or I’m sure someone here can list them off the top of their head.

Thanks. I have an imperial 'set' which had the right size for all the other screws, but the smaller sizes didnt fit the outdrive screws. The screws could be rounded, ill check, but they didnt look it.
If i can find out the other sizes ill order some new keys anyway.
Imperial sets can be a bit crapy in the UK as not many people use them.

Allen screw

4-40 socket head screws = 3/32" allen
4-40 Flat head screw and button head screw = 1/16" allen
4-40 set screws (grub screws) 0.050" allen (metric equivalent 1.3mm)
0-80 button head screws (idler gears) 0.035" allen (metric equivalent 0.9mm)

stealth gearbox cars.

5/64" allen (metric equivalent 2mm).

If this is an ongoing hobby give yourself a treat and get some allen drivers. IMHO get the best MIP they are expensive but will last way longer than anything else. :D

Wiha makes some very good and durable hex allen wrenches I would swear by.
Most other allen keys normally strip and then make it impossible to catch the small .0035 screw head.
