what are the typical parts to replace in a non-stealth?

Post by pcrussell50 »

My 30 year old gold pan with a 6-gear is mostly cleaned and reassembled for prettier shelf-sitting. The original 6-gear has always worked and never been opened. I did run a few packs with a BL Reedy 3300kv/25c lipo through it, but it still passes TA's "how to test your diff": when I hold the spur gear and turn one wheel, the other turns the other way. But it's not buttery smooth when I do that test, and I'm pretty sure the drag of the motor alone would not be enough to pass that test, so its probably not as nice as it could be.

Based on the fact that it's still working but not as smooth as it was 30 years ago, can you tell what 6-gear diff parts that I should expect to replace, from my description?

I have a couple of stealths but I want to keep this one stock.

only a tear down and inspection will tell you for sure. But the 6 gear will usually chew up it's diff balls and rings before anything else since they are exposed and directly responsible for diff action. So that is usually a good start. If you take the spur gear off and spin each wheel you can feel for roughness on each side to see if there is anything else going on.
