Early MIP Transmisson Cleanup

The plan is to freshen it up with a good cleaning and new grease.

I've found threads and scans for 4wd and SP1, but just a few pics of this one. Would love to learn more about it, especially the model name, any instruction/ad scans of it, etc. So let the discussion begin!

How it came to me, a real Frankenstein.

Thanks Shodog. I'm learning bit by bit. I might have already mentioned this, but you're collection is amazing. So clean. And great pics. I just browse through your pictures and notice something new every time.


DJ Kilroy, I found them at a garage sale just a few blocks from my house. I rarely stop at garage sales, but this one had 5' tall antique wheeled fire extinguisher out front.

I have the same thing, I mean the white nylon casing from MIP, but it is fashioned to fit the RC10 buggy. The ball diff inside is narrower and is aluminum, at first I thought it was full metal. But it looks like it is in very good condition, I have 2 brass gears. I think it is great you have a nylon gear, it will lower wear and tear in the diff gear and the other brass, its also a fail-safe between the 2.

OH, YES, that is where I first saw the diff, from your post and I followed the other links from it, Yes, I have the same one as yours except that the gearbox is white, I guess they either changed to white from black or vis-vesa OR made it side by side for preference from the buyer. The thing is these are really cool, I very much like the design of the MIP gearbox casing an I can use to go with a Tamiya SRB like the scorcher, I have the original front arms from the MK 1 scorcher saved up, it has the thin arms.

Phin was selling this diff on ebay a few months back and I INQUIRED, told me it was for the RC10, same size and pitch of the SRB they are selling now, except the axles are shorter AND since I had a few RC10s around, I opened up one and right there, I had the same MIP ball diff!!

I am going to open up the others to see what might be inside

Oh, so there were no 2 versions, ha ha ha, that's what I thought initially. Well MIP certainly did a good job at making these, they are really compact in nature, I like the simple rounds of the design.

I have a stealth ball diff as well, well used, I will assemble that and keep as spare. I also have NEW MIP axle ends, bearings but not the aluminum diff gear, good to have.

I am at the moment trying to get my hands on a CRP or thorp ball diff for the kyosho scorpion.

These parts are really cool, they are made well and performance wise, its top notch. Just make sure you have a proper slipper, you don't want the diff to slip as well as create the differential rotation of the wheels
