With the right parts, a hopped up diff can weigh less than the stock nylon gear setup. This is a diff from a T2 as an example.

When I raced all the time, I preferred an alloy gear to the stock nylon gear. My reasoning was that if my diff did fail, I wasn't spending 30 minutes trying to chip melted plastic off the outdrives between rounds. I could tear it down, toss new balls and rings in it and my car was back together in 20 minutes.
