Kyosho Triumph ready for resto
Finally had a chance to give some attention to the Triumph I recently picked up for my circa '92 - '93 collection. I might not have time to dig into it for a few weeks, but I'll keep this thread updated as the car progresses.
First impressions:
- Car is complete without any major damage. It's a good start for resto.
- Rear tranny mount holes appear to be stripped.
- Lower chassis plate, bumper, and rear motor plate have typical scratches that you'd expect on a runner.
- Upper chassis plate is in good shape, minus the stickers.
- Battery case is damaged, and straps are missing. The previous owner installed a velcro strap.
- Happy to see the car came with period-correct motor, esc, and receiver.
Obvious needs:
- Lower chassis plate
- Tranny case
- Front bumper
- Rear motor plate
- Battery case / straps
- Gear cover
- Rims / Tires
- Body / Wing

Yeah, that is a good base to start with. Is that tape over the tranny hole on the bottom of the chassis?

It appears to be some kind of vinyl that the owner glued on. The original under cover (TM3) is gone. I'll have to add that to the list of needed parts.

Re: Kyosho Triumph ready for resto
Gave the Triumph a closer inspection tonight and it appears the previous owner hot-glued the receiver to the bottom chassis plate, and the ESC switch to the top of the tranny. Booo...
Fortunately, I have a NIP bottom chassis plate and tranny case when it comes time to reassemble.

Hot glue eh? That's a new one...anybody have suggestions on how to remove it? Just for future reference. Maybe it gets brittle when frozen?

hot glue should pretty much peel off. otherwise, you can probably use a heat gun or hair dryer to heat it to liquid and wipe it off with a cloth.

Re: Kyosho Triumph ready for resto
Update...
I began initial dissassembly of the Triumph today while the kiddo was taking his afternoon nap (removed electronics, front end, and upper chassis plate). Looks like I'll have to replace most of the screws, along with the aluminum chassis and steering posts. Some of the screws had nearly siezed in the posts due to the dissimilar metal. Several of the heads partially stripped while removing them from the posts, and the head of one of them in the steering post actually broke off!
Don't forget to use anti-sieze when assembling dissimilar metals!

Re: Kyosho Triumph ready for resto
Some friends and I experimented with hot glue back in the day. I remember it being easy to remove and it came off clean. Like so clean the part where the glue was would be super shiny clean when it was removed.
