Help, need info on converting my rc10t to brushless

Post by Crazydeath »

Ok this is my first post. I acquired a rc10t back in 1992. My wife was quick to take it as hers because of the fun factor. So here it is almost 20 years later and my wife and I got bit by the rc bug again. Well the tech has changed and we quickly relised a upgrade was needed to get our or should I say her rc10t rolling again.

For christmas I would like to get her eveything she needs to change over to brushless. Ok so where do I start? What do I need? What brushless combo should I run? No racing just playing around and fun on a local track so a waterproof system would be nice. What hop ups do I need to get? ect.

Thanks for any info you have.

Ok did some research and I think I am figureing out what I need.

Dose anyone here see anything wrong with this esc combo?

http://www.hobbypartz.com/car.html

Also I will upgrade the tranny to rpm and rebuild it with new bearings and stuff. I thought about hopping my drive shafts to 3/16". Mabey new cvc mounts also.

Any input would be awsome.

Thanks

That combo looks good, remember that AE has never changed the offset of their truck rims, so any 3/16 rim will work. Watch batteries over 5000mah as they are sometimes too large to fit in the bulkhead cup

Ya I saw that the 5000mah were too big. I was thinking mabey a 3s lipo 2000mah would fit fine. I do not know what the runtime would be. And if i decided to go 5000mah i have access to a machine shop so I would just have a new bulkhead cup made up out of aluminum if needed.

I was also looking at the traxxas esc combo because of the water proof factor. Any thoughts on that?

They are decent for a runner but the only thing that people get carried away with is that while the electronics are waterproof...the rest of the buggy isn't. Unless you plan on running thru water or underwater the waterproof stuff isn't really needed. I have a few sets and have done alot of water running but got tired of bearings falling apart and the maintenance of it all so they don't get too wet any more  .

Well I don't plan on running it through water that much if at all. The thing is wintertime in western Oregon is very rainy. The roads and gravle dry out between storms for the most part but the dirt and grass is always wet. I just was worried about that. I will try my best to keep from running on the wet stuff but there is always that oops factor.

There is a Mamba pro system I have been looking at also. A littel more money for it but I'm not sure it's worth the extra money.

Here is my 2 pennies:

I have a Mamba Max Pro and it has been great. Yes, its a bit more than the Hobbypartz stuff, but its not quite as much as other brands either. Gives you good software which you can tailor brake / throttle curves and other stuff and it comes with a code to order a free Castle Link so you can hook up the ESC to your computer. Software is a free download from the Castle site. I have a 4600kv setup and just switched to a 4 pole 5700 kv which is, to put it mildly, 'stupid fast' on 2s lipo.

I am also running a 5000 mah GensAce 2S lipo, which I did get from Hobbypartz and it *just* fits into the rear bulkhead if you get the hard case lipo. Actually, it stretches the bulkhead just a tiny bit. You won't be able to use the original battery cups unless you cut the front off it. I use the B44 battery posts with the threaded rods and round thumb screws, and then use the stock battery strap.

The other thing I use which works great is the Fly Sky GT3B radio and receiver which was only $35 at Hobbypartz.com An excellent bargain radio which works very well.

Hope that helps, good luck!

Yes this info helps alot. Can you post pics please? The radio is no problem. I own 6 traxxas nitro trucks with 2.4 radio so I will just get anouther traxxas reciver and hi touque servo.

I think I'm going to go with that mamba max pro set up you talked about.

Thanks again for that great info.

Okay, so here are some pics of my RC10 with the above gear. Well, except the Fly Sky system, which I've moved to my RC18B.

What are you using for a rear battery mount? I have those same battery packs and they don't fit into the stock RC10T rear battery mount, and I'm hesitant to cut the top of the mount off.

It's a stock rc10 rear bulkhead but it does take a bit of pushing to get it in there. It will stretch the bulkhead a very little bit but it's nothing major.
