Slipping Stealth - need a little help!
Hey everyone - so yesterday I was driving the car with the new Gens Ace battery (awesome btw) in it and then the car started having what I can only describe as a slipping tranny.
I went inside, took a look at the slipper and tightened it down and went back out. Everything seemed fine again for a minute or two then started slipping again.
Its a high pitched type of a sound.
So I went in again and tightened it all the way down but same thing happened. I took off the spur and pads to look at them and couldn't see anything wrong with them physically so put it all back on and same thing happened. It was okay initially then started slipping after a minute or two.
When I took the spur etc off and spun the wheels using the shaft and couldn't detect any play in the gears, so I don't think its an internal issue.
Also, if I counter rotate the wheels, the differential feels tight, but I haven't actually checked the diff bolt yet.
My question is - assuming the diff bolt is tight, could my slipper pads be worn out? The pads were new along with the B4 top shaft and other parts which were literally installed just a week ago.
Could it be something internal that is slipping just when things get heated up?
The pinion is also tight.
What else can I check?

holding both tires still, try to turn the spur. if it moves easily but the topshaft stays put, the slipper is loose. if the spur and topshaft both rotate easily, then it's something with the diff.

I did try that and when I turn the spur while holding the wheels, I can't move it, so I know the slipper is tight.scr8p wrote:holding both tires still, try to turn the spur. if it moves easily but the topshaft stays put, the slipper is loose. if the spur and topshaft both rotate easily, then it's something with the diff.
Neither the topshaft OR the spur moves so, I'm thinking it must be something else....if that's even possible.
I will go check my diff now.

Well, I don't know if it was the diff nut or not, but it was definitely a bit loose. I tightened it down all the way, then backed off 1/8th of a turn.
It feels like when I try to counter rotate the wheels though that its really tight in there. Wondering if maybe I need a need diff gear and diff balls?
Can someone repost a link to rebuilding a stealth tranny? I bought this used so I'm sure it could use a rebuild at some point.

Re: Slipping Stealth - need a little help!
Well I caved and tore the tranny apart. The diff isn't what I expected - it was a ball bearing setup, not the small diff balls I expected. Anyways I tightened the diff all the way and slipper. It was good for a minute or so then started slipping again. I checked the screws for the pinion, motor, slipper nut and screw for the diff. But everything was tight. So what's the problem?

Re: Slipping Stealth - need a little help!
sounds to me like the diff is installed the wrong way. The adjustment screw needs to be on the correct side of the trans in order to prevent the screw from backing out. check the manual for the assembly. Bolt head looks like it goes on the spur gear side.

Re: Slipping Stealth - need a little help!
Thx. Well fig 28 doesn't look like my diff gear. And the diff screw with the washers and balls - just aren't there!

interesting....so do you think it's shot and melted or do you have something else installed in there?
a picture of what you are looking at will speak volumes.

Here is a pic of what the diff looks like. I did find the diff balls sandwiched in the washer (and promptly lost 1, so now I need new ones anyways). But as you can see, the main gear is completely different.

Re: Slipping Stealth - need a little help!
what's wrong with the diff gear? looks like stealth gear to me.
the tiny 5/64 balls that you lost are thrust balls, not diff balls. take the diff rings out of the diff gear and you'll see the diff balls.

It doesn't look like the one in the instructions posted above like this:

Re: Slipping Stealth - need a little help!
Pull the diff rings out of the diff gear, clean them, and put 2 dabs of CA glue on the backs to glue them to the diff outdrives.
Re-assemble.
Buy a new 5-40 nut for the outside of the slipper.

Re: Slipping Stealth - need a little help!
Mine has a solid bearing and the one in the link has individual diff balls. Unless I'm missing something.scr8p wrote:explain to me what is different.
Eau Rouge, thanks for the tip, I will do that!

Re: Slipping Stealth - need a little help!
like i said above, take the diff rings out of the diff gear. the individual diff balls are under them.
all those 2 5/32 x 5/16 bearings really do is keep the diff components in line.
