question on gear modules: M's and DP's

Post by Mr. ED »

The local hobbyshop owner was so happy I bough all this old stuff he couldn't get rid off... he gave me his old custom made gears.
(They look custom made anyway, magnesium maybe)

It's ultima outer gears with a smaller pitch than usual.

they are beaten but still run very smooth compared to the standard big teeth external gears. But when I put my moter pinion on, it's not running smooth over the spur.

The pitch of the spur is very similar to the pitch of an optima mid spur, or Ultima pro (2).
I have those purs also and they mesh way better with the kyosho pinion.
I already tried the american standard 48DP pinions, but they mesh much worse even.
I think he pitch is really just a tiny bit off: a 23 teeth pinion meshes smoother than a 16, but still not good

I remember Kyosho and Tamiya had slightly different modules and maybe I need Tamiya pinions?

Can anyone tell me what was the standard Module size for kyosho in those days? Was it M 0.5?
I think Tamiya had M 0.6 and even ventured with M0.7 on the super astute. Is that right and are those still on the shelves?

Very early Kyosho and Tamiya used 0.8 module gears, these were used in the original Optima and Ultima. These are very similar to 32dp and they mesh together fine.

Both later Tamiyas and Optima Mids used 0.6 module spur gears and pinions. These are a little bit bigger than 48dp gears and they just don't work together.

M 0.6 pinions are readily available, Tamiya still use them and sell them as 'AV' pinions and many companies such as RW Racing make them.

So nobody used 0.5 or 0.7?
Yokomo or AYK, or another japanese brand?

It must be real close to 0.6 what I need
