6-gear question

Post by radioactivity »

I was rebuilding a couple 6 gear transmissions when I noticed a difference in my 6612 Axle Drive Gears.
Maybe common knowledge, but axle clearances with the outdrive has always been a problem for me.
Droop vs engagement etc.
So is this depth difference new vs old manufacturing?

I never took notice to it before. But, I wonder if the deeper cut came with the introduction of the universals.

I guess why I'm confused is that 3 or 4 months ago I bought 2 new outdrives for my Houge RC10 and they are shallow cut.
They came in new style packaging and did not require a lot of filing and deburring like I have been used to.
These, with the deeper slots, came in the trans of an RC10 I got at Christmas. That Rc10 is a hodgepodge of parts from different AE cars.
To me, deeper cuts are definately preferable.

Thanks Chuck. Having only old parts on hand, I'm seeing this difference for the first time. Also notice that the teeth faces are shortened leaving, possibly, a thrust bearing face protruding toward the outdrive side. Until now, I've seen only two variations of this part; the very early ones have more "flash" on the edges of the teeth at the spine plate side of the gear while the later ones are very clean and appear almost to have been machined (like those in your photo).

Good eye Doug
I didn't see that!
I measured .201" vs .188" on the gear face.
The extra depth in the axel pin cut is .05" or 1.27mm
Shoot, now I'm going to have to try these deeper cut outdrives with the B44 axel-B4 hub carrier combo.
And the 6 gear I rebuilt for the Houge was soooo smooth.
I've got Yokomo 90.5 axels on the way if it fails.

An update.

Mystery possibly solved!
I just found a pair of outdrives that are apparently Thorp
They look just like the pair I could not identify before. Deeper cut axel pin slots and no shoulder on the gear.
I discounted Thorp originally because I had only seen 48p gear sets.
Guessing that they also made direct replacement 32p outdrives.
I have a very, very vague memory of the set of mine in question being ??powdercoated?? black. But I could easily be wrong.
