Raco Roadrunner project

Post by tuna.Rc »

This Raco Roadrunner has been sitting in a shed for a good 20 years. It's previous owner obviously didnt have safe storage in mind. It came with almost nearly enough spare parts to build a 2nd Roadrunner ( with the exception of a frame , fuel tank, front shock towers, wheels & tires) .

My plan is to get this one running and driving without doing a complete teardown. ( I am famous for tearing stuff apart , losing motivation and not finishing projects) I would like to possibly find the missing parts I need and build a 2nd Roadrunner out of the spare parts, but that will be a project for later on.

It has a decent layer of grime, spider webs and leaves. The steering servo is seized. Lots of rusty hardware. I had the idea of soaking the rusty hardware in apple cider vinegar to remove the rust. I'd rather not use the new in packs hardware yet.

I removed the steering servo , receiver and battery pack. Sprayed some simple green on the buggy and took it to a car was for a quick power wash. Yes , i plugged the exhaust and wrapped the carburetor to keep water from getting inside.

Here is the battery pack I need to find a replacement for. I also removed the carburetor. I am still trying to find a carburetor rebuild kit for it. I believe it will need more than just a cleaning and primer bulb. I bet the diaphragm is hard and crusty. I have had no luck on finding a direct replacement. Everything I have found so far will need to be modified.

I was happy to find that the engine does have spark.Shortly after I found one front shock tower has a hairline crack in it. Sadly, I do not have spares.

So that's my Roadrunner project. It will be a slow project that I will work on piece by piece . I refuse to do a complete teardown because I know I will eventually lose motivation and leave it in a pile of parts for months on end.
