advice on restore of team car

Post by TeamCar90 »

Hey everyone. I'm new to this site. Grew up on Florida gulf coast, tinkering with RC cars, and now in Oakland and getting my boys into it. Thanks for such an invaluable resource!

So I've got my old RC10 Team Car and have been starting to restore it. My goal is to run it occasionally, but not super hard. Keep it looking nice and maybe have it make it to grandkids one day. :)

Rebuilt the diff and 2 of the 4 shocks, but the tires are giving me heartburn. Weighing converting it to 2.2 modern wheels (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDIEaCRsC9s) using a B4 CVA and carriers or trying to find vintage fit tires and staying as "stock" as possible. Tracking down the conversion parts, especially the small parts in the carriers, looks painful but then I can have different sets of wheels/tires. Looking for some advice here. Has anyone had success in recent years taking this path?

Also, curious if anyone is using a JConcepts Detonator body on their car and is happy with it. Considering going that route or with one of the Boki vintage reproductions - Viper - I think.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experience you have here.

PS. And because all of this is going slowly, I bought myself a 2019 Kyosho Ultima as a distraction.

Wheels are easy enough.

If you have 3/16 rear axles, just get the JConcepts or JC Racing wheels.

If you have 1/4 rear axles, JC Racing makes those as well.

Alternatively, you can use the JConcepts fronts with Traxxas 7171 rears and Factory Works hax adapters. They aren't a perfect match but are decent enough.

There are pics of the JConcepts and Traxxas wheels together on page 2.

I have a Dominator Worlds body and an original Viper. IMHO, the Dominator Worlds body fits much better.

Many of the Viper bodies that I've seen (including mine) fit poorly around the rear shock tower, requiring more trimming.

This is the Dominator body. It isn't short in the front, this car is setup in long wheelbase format.
