Older ESC's and LIPO's?

So next topic for the day as a newb.

Older ESC's. So back in the day when I saved my allowance, I purchased an old NOVAK ROOSTER ESC http://teamnovak.com/products/esc/rooster/index.html

Question is, since LIPO power wasn't available back then, would a 2S Lipo kill this thing?

No as long as you stay under the max voltage it won't be a problem.. If running for full pack you either have to have experience at how lipos dump or buy a voltage alarm type thing.. Just follow the basice lipo rules as you would normally.. If your not that confident definitely get a low voltage alarm...

Bully is right, get a low voltage alarm.

If you know the battery, know the system and know exactly how long you can run you don't technically need one. If you answered no or maybe to any of that, then get an alarm

one other item: lipo's will maintain a high voltage until it dumps. they will also have 2-5 times the capacity of the nicd cells the esc was designed to run with. This means you will have a lot of power to dissipate for 2-5 times longer. Always run it for 5 minutes or so and then check the heat sink temps. if it's too hot to touch, let it cool before proceeding.

while most of the esc's you find have a thermal shut down, it's still not a good idea to keep hitting it constantly.

I know the ESC was able to run a 7 cell hump pack. So 7.2v that means just stay at a 2s Lipo. It's that 0.2v overage going to be an issue?

The voltage alarms I have from flying. So putting on in the truck won't be an issue. Just increases the overall safety.

I have toyed with adding a fan. Even when running the 6 cell Night packs.

I am really excited to get this whole thing back together to see how it all works.

7 cell is 8.4v so no problem there mate.. Yeah like others mentioned keep an eye on temps of both the esc and motor.. Have fun mate

No problems, I've run 12 volts through some old Tekins. Cheap volt alarm is a good idea.

Sorry for the late follow-up. Work is getting in the way of free-time. I think I will start off with 2S to test how the now "old" ESC handles it. As I get comfortable with it, I may ramp up as I see temps stay constant.

Hopefully I get through this before the weather turns to crap here. Already headed in that direction.

As long as your ESC is in good shape, it will be fine with a 2s lipo. I run a 2s lipo on a Rooster, Dually, T4, 410M1c and a Duster with no issues. As mentioned above, heat and battery dump should be the only concerns. Have fun!
