Spark plugs . And I thought they have a better idea.

Post by rctenracer »

First time ford owner. Picked up a 2000 F-150 for work cheap with 200.000 miles . I broke off two out of eight plugs trying to get them out. The ford dealer wants 800 bucks to get them out. Any help before I go that route. I am told this common on the 5.4 and snap-on makes a tool for this problem.

Most of the Ford engines from 99-2000 had this problem if you left the plugs in over 100k- We had the same problem with the V-10 in our 00' Superduty- (with only 33k :x ) Where did they break exactly and which engine is it? ( sorry, just re-read and saw it was the 5.4 )

The plugs twisted off at the threads . Threads and insolater both banks at the rear still there.Just talked to seller the plugs were changed out at 90,000.

So would you classify this truck as:

F-ed
On
Race
Day

or

Found
On
Road
Dead?

are they aluminum heads? I would think the plugs would have had anti-seize on them? crappy problem. Are these plugs the ones with a ton of threads?

Not here to make comments on manufactors . Hell they all have problems. My last pick-up was a 97 dodge that rusted out at 50,000 miles and the 2005 chevy that I have currently has had issues with the insturment cluster since day one.

Are the deep head? Our 6.8 plugs were coming loose from the high revving v10 then galled in the threads from the vibrations from high rpm.

sorry man, can't help with the ford jokes....not that they don't all have problems, but now you got 2 broken spark plugs. little bit more of a show stopper than some rust or crappy gauges, which btw, if you are under 7 yrs/70k miles on the chevy you might be able to get the cluster replaced under some TSB's.

http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item.asp?P65=&tool=all&item_ID=83502&group_ID=22166&store=snapon-store&dir=catalog

this is a broken spark plug removal kit but it doesn't seem to match the year of your trucl, is it a 3 valve head?

92 bucks beats 800 anyway....though I would probably price out a set of rebuild heads and go that route. at 200k miles anyway those guide are probably almost done.

are they the 2 piece plugs? i heard a lot of bad thing about thoes, the bottom part of the plug twists off just below the hex leaving the threads in the head. there was some kind of removal kit on 2 guys garage they were using to remove them rather easily,i would look into that. champion makes a solid 1 piece design plug that will never come apart to use for replacement. i hear the longer the oe plugs are left in the worse they are to get out, better to take them out as soon as you get the truck to avoid costly repairs later.

I love my F150 I have 99 4wd supercab I have had since new with 230,000 miles on it. It still runs and drives like it did when I bought new no rust even. I just cant bring myself to get rid of it. I was told that the Triton V8 are good for 400,000 easy as long as its taken care of Im starting to believe it. Now that I said that its going to break down on me
Those are my toys and no I will not share!

Very common with the 5.4's. My uncles have a shop and they're always making service calls to Ford dealers to remove busted plugs. Usually he welds something to the top of the threads of the broken plug and gets it out that way. I'd check with an independent shop and see what they quote you.
