Goldie into runner build

Post by JK Racing »

been quite a long time since I been on the AE wagon...but getting one of my racing buddies into vintage has boosted me back into the vintage addiction

since he is an AE guy, and I am a Losi fanboy, we have been bench racing our vintage trucks without ever hitting a track...LXT vs RC10T. then he picks up a buggy, not to be out done, I work a deal and pick up a goldie...beaten up pretty bad. (decided i will beat him with an AE buggy, then a Losi)

pic before I got it...no battery or antenna mount when I got it (LOL)

So now to the fun stuff....

tore it down, tranny was FILLED with green wheel bearing grease
right rear arm mount broken
rear foam tires? front pan car tires with a rubber insert in them
bent shock shaft

parts after a cleaning, and a plan to sell off the parts i wont be using for this racer

rear bulkhead (gone already)

so today i began re-assembling the 6 gear tranny. after cleaning pounds of grease out of the gearbox, then the gears themselves i come to the point where the left pinion gear needs to be pressed back onto the diff half....

dont press it with too much force...

CRACK
Image

deeply depressed....i decide to ez off the chassis, to get it ready for powder coating

dont leave the ez off on too long....

Image

it does come off with the wire wheel on the dremel...slowly   (see the motor mount  )

so on to positive notes:

Plans for the future

alloy BB steering
atlas towers front/rear
B4 shocks front/rear
CVDs/Universals
all black plastics (yes, i will dye the tranny...maybe)
17.5 brushless system
lipo
spektrum
modern rubber
  • I really want to use B4 rear wheels, but not by using different arms, if I must, I will go to B2/B3/TT Phoenix rear wheels

looks like you got your hands full. Having said that, looks like you are going a great job on the build so far. I would go for brushless/Lipo/stealth trans with a B4 top drive assembly, works awesome.

17.5 and a 6 gear should be no issues...if it goes boom...back to the drawing board!

oh...a quick trip to the mother in laws work and 5 minutes in the media blaster...(not perfect, but great for a powdercoating base)

Guys ran 11-turns and 7-cells on the 6-gear back in the day. Brushless and LiPo is the same power and less voltage as brushed/NiCd/NiMh. I don't know why everyone is so afraid of putting power to a 6-gear tranny. Build the thing right, and it won't "blow up."

There is nothing magical about brushless motors and LiPo batteries other than they nothing need a lot less maintenance and baby sitting than their counterparts did 20 years ago.

The differences that the MIP and successive Stealth gearboxes brought to the RC10 were FAR less moving parts, less rotating mass, lower center of gravity, lower polar moment of inertia and an internal differential. Obviously, less parts to break is a great benefit of those, but more capable of handling more power was not one of the selling points.

The 6-gear is a fine transmission for any contemporary power, with the exception of the most ridiculous combination, and those would take down most electric gearboxes.

Thanks Eau...I know we ran 13X3's and 11X2's (my favorite 2 motors for Sprint car & 2wd mod) in dirt oval all the time in our cars. The only drawback I can see for the 6 gear tranny is no slipper. With a 17.5, hopefully it wont be an issue unless I am running on a really slippery track.

Slocarrod..PM me about the gear, I bought the wrong one  I need the 6621 (right gear, large hole), I bought 6620 (left gear, small hole).

I should have a gear or the whole assembly in used condition. Pm me your address and I will get it out in the mail to you, for free.
