hotshot 'motor plate' question

I found this hotshot manual:

Note that in figure 6, there is this thing called a 'motor' plate to be placed between the motor and the gearbox. I remember ta01 also has something like this, sort of like a thing piece of green/grey piece, it was a rather unbreakable piece except if you cut it. Do you know what is it for? Insulation?

I guess there must be a functional reason for it. Any info?

it is just a piece of thin card board. my geuss it is used as a insulator to keep heat away from the plastic gear box. most all tamiya kits have them.

I use too not ever use them as i like my motor to breath as it covers the cooling slots on the can.

When running my hot shot and boomerang on a loose track i found i was getting fine bits of dirt and granite in my rear gearbox only.

Took some soul searching and talking to my old vetran rc mate he told me you have to run the motor plate cover to fully seal the rear gearbox.

Dirt can ( has to me ) get thru the motor vent holes and into the gearbox.

It seems to be more important with the mid mounted motor and with 4wd to throw dirt from the front wheels into the motor. I never had this problem with any other Tamiya 2 wd.
