TRX-1 project

Post by Brandon G »

Well, thanks to Asa, I have my one and only Traxxas Vintage racer.... It is a Traxxas TRX-1 in excellent condition... He had replaced quite a few of the white nylon parts before parting with it, so there is not a whole lot left to do to it. I have a new motor plate waiting to go on as well as a NIB SWB graphite chassis...

I will need a few of the following parts, maybe somebody could help me out with them...

White ball ends for the turn buckles
Grey anodized shock caps (4)
White front bumper
White battery strap. (I have the cup, but the strap is missing)

Any suggestions for a period correct motor to go in this dude??

I will post some pics after I get the motor plate and chassis swapped out.

I think the traxxas uses the 5.8mm ball cup...similar to the older kyosho style. If I'm not mistaken, traxxas still sells those turn buckles. What length do you need?

As for the motor, that's a tough one. Some motors are assoicated with a certain car manfacturer (reedy/assocaited, trinity/kyosho, revolution/losi). I don't remember if traxxas had anything like that. I remember that scott montgomery gave traxxas's their first big win, but I don't recall what motor he used. :(

Roger

What motors did Vehlow run, he won the Nats one year with a TRX1. I think it was in stock, but still a national champ. I wish I hadn't sold mine now

Tower still has most lengths of turnbuckles, so that's good... They still sell the rod ends, but they are black. I would like to use white if possible, but ya'll know how that goes...

I will have to give RCCA a look to find out what motor Vehlow used for the win. Mark, I'll bring her out this weekend for you to check out.

The shocks that came on this car has the dark grey anodizing on the bodies with anodized blue shock caps... Is this correct? I remember seeing the pics having Blue shock bodies as well, but I'm sure they probably changed thier colors around as more kits were made.

yep, the shocks were hard anodized and teflon coated, dark gray. Mine has blue caps. They may had sub'ed in gray caps later on, I dunno....

I can't seem to find that article in RCCA where Vehlow won, but I didn't spend a ton of time on it.

Scott Montgomery was in the Amain on the 91 nats, and if I remember what I read last night correctly, it was with a peak perf. motor. So that is a data point to go by.

Ok, I think I found something. In 89, Tom Owens won a major event using B&R motor. I think B&R is a good choice because it doesn't have any affiliations with any of the other car makers. You can also find these pretty easy...

For me, Traxxas was more in association with Peak performance motors.
May be it was only in france...
Great association was with the "wild thing" 13*3 at this time!

OK, got to digging a little and saw that Scott Montgomery put the TRX-1 in the A main of the 2wd Open class at the Detroit Worlds. He was running Peak Performance with a "Rick's Pick" badged motor.

I think rick's pick was the 12*4...in france I was running a 15*2...
I started to look for faster motors after this world race!
Traxxas TRX1 was able to assume very fast speed due to it's very hight stability (what was also understeering).

Hope you will be able to find the right vintage motor. Wait and see. It's a long time I did not see any.

It came with a newer Bandit body, which looks a lot like the TRX-3, but I will definetely change it. I have a Proline X-factor body that seems like a good fit, so I may use it. Always on the lookout for an original TRX1 body though.

Update on this build.

I got a SWB Traxxas graphite chassis for a whopping $1 NIP off the bay, so I installed it.
New motor plate and B&R Marnum motor. The slipper assembly was a mess on this car when I started tearing it apart. Luckily Whitehouse hobbies had a complete slipper for sale with all the parts including the white gears.

The steering rack had stripped screws in both the standoff posts and I had to cut the screws off with a dremel just to get it out. I have an A&L steering rack assy new to go on there, but I don't know if I want to do that or just drill out the stuck screws and retap the posts. It would be nice to have the bearing steering on there though.

I'll get off my butt and take some pics soon.

Still need a white battery cup set, white front bumper, and white ballends. Oh, and a body too.
