Kyosho Nitro Lineup 1993

Post by Dangeruss »

Kyosho giving hobbyists a glimpse at nitro salvation in this six-car lineup from 1993:

Nitro Thrasher: 1/10 4wd nitro powered Monster Truck released in 1992. Based off the GP-10 4wd nitro platform. Aluminum plate chassis and Kelron/glass filled nylon construction. Four-wheel independent suspension featured lower a-arms with suspension limiting screws and adjustable camber links with damping via four plastic bodied, oil-filled, coilover shocks hanging from aluminum shock towers. Twin bell crank steering with spring loaded servo saver and adjustable tie rods. Mid mounted motor, pinion and spur primary drive, bevel gear diff equipped prop shaft and final drive belts with bevel gear diffs at each end of the truck. Dogbone axles, plastic front knuckles and rear carriers, two-piece, high offset, white nylon wheels and 5.4-inch-tall V-Tread Monster Truck tires. Highly detailed Ford F-250 clear lexan body with chrome plated grille, side mirrors, triple roll bar, off-road lights, as well as front and rear bumpers. The partially assembled kit included bushings, an O.S. .12 CZ-R motor with recoil starter, muffler, screw top fuel tank, fuel bottle and glow starter, less radio.

Thunderbird Stock Car: 1/10 2wd gas powered on-road car released in 1991. Based on the 1/10 2wd off-road Rampage buggy with an aluminum pan style chassis, molded nylon for the front and rear bulkheads and four-wheel independent lower a-arm/fixed camber link suspension. Auminum capped, nylon bodied, oil filled coilover shocks canted towards new lower profile aluminum shock towers front and rear. Inline axles actuated by adjustable tie rods leading to twin bellcranks with a built-in servo saver. O.S. .12 CZ-R engine with recoil starter, pinion and spur primary drive, prop shaft with belt final drive connected to a bevel geared differential. Metal dogbones, plastic rear carriers, black nylon wheels, green dot foam tires and bronze bushings. A clear lexan T-Bird body, large front bumper, flip top gas tank, four AA receiver pack and four D-cell glow plug ignitor pack were included (minus batteries) with the partially assembled kit, which was sold less radio.

Sandmaster: 1/10 2wd gas powered off-road buggy released in 1993. Utilized parts from multiple Kyosho models in its all Kelron construction. The mini-bathtub chassis would come from the Kyosho Outrage electric buggy, while the 4-wheel independent lower a-arm and fixed camber link suspension would come from the Rocky parts bin. Twin bellcrank steering with built in servo saver and fixed tie rods took their place under a forward chassis brace. Behind that, fixed to a heat dissipating aluminum plate, was a GS11 engine which in combination with a pinion & spur primary drive led to a bevel gear diff in the transmission outputting power to metal dogbone axles. Oil filled plastic body coilovers took their place front and rear, supported by molded plastic shock towers. The Kyosho Rampage would donate its 340/30/20 M and 195/60/20 S-S Knobby Bridgestone tires and aero disk style wheels to the cause as well. The Sandmaster was sold 90% assembled and included bushings, a flip top gas tank and pull starter, both accessible with the lexan body/wing in place, less radio.

USA-1 Nitro Crusher: 1/8 4wd nitro powered monster truck unveiled in 1991. Based off the 1/8 Burns 4wd 0ff-road buggy. Equipped with a plate aluminum chassis and nylon constructed four-wheel independent, camber adjustable, double a-arm suspension. A twin bellcrank steering system with spring loaded servo saver and adjustable tie rods just ahead of the plastic radio tray. Midship mounted engine with pinion/spur primary drive and center mounted bevel gear diff. Metal dog bones led to front and rear mounted bevel gear differentials whose sealed gearcases doubled as suspension bulkheads. Steel front universal axles with aluminum knuckles and dogbone with nylon rear hub carriers. Tall aluminum plate shock towers front and rear held eight Kelron bodied, oil-filled coilover shock absorbers with new lower shock pivots. Aluminum finished 2.8 nylon wheels wrapped in 6.5x4.13x3-0-KC chevron pattern tires. That 911 is sweet! Had no idea that was out there. Kyosho also did that 930 Slant Nose too, didn't they?

At some point in the mid-late 90's, the USA-1 Nitro Crusher became based off of the Inferno MP-5, they changed the gas tank too at that time.

Thanks for posting these articles, didn't read the mags back when, enjoying them now.

Very welcome. The 911 is cool, and they did indeed make a Slant Nose, in their Scale Series and Super Scale Series, both introduced in 1990:

The new flip top tank for the USA-1 N/C came in 1994, which is when "Inferno based" started, but the trucks didn't move past the Burns BS-51 style chassis, whereas the Inferno MP-3 got the BS-108 chassis and the MP-5 got a IF-004 chassis. The MP-3 suspension is the same as the Burns, while the MP-5 is different.

Here's the Inferno MP-5 chassis pan (not my MP-5's):

The later model USA-1 NC:

The tank and pan are very similar.

Indeed the pans are very similar, I'd go so far to say deceptively so being the Inferno was an evolution of the Burns. But between the USA-1 N/C and inferno MP-5 the bulkheads, suspension, motor/drive systems, and their mounting points are all different. Cross referencing an MP-5 manual with a USA-1 manual shows how few parts they share in common. Close in appearance, different in actuality.

That's more of the point I was making, that with the Burns to Inferno evolution, the USA-1 NC similarly evolved and used MP-5 compatible parts. I still have the steel gear kit for the USA-1 NC, which were all MP-5/Burns parts from the period.

Ah, I get what you're sayin'. Yeah, gears, universals, dogbones, and some other parts being cross compatible. Probably the second coolest thing about cars & trucks from that era, when manufactures made evolutionary models and not outright new models, letting compatibility of parts stretch across generations.

There were two different versions of the USA-1 NC over the years, the one with the old gas tank, then the later model that had more of the MP-5 era stuff with it, and a couple improvements, but can't remember what those were. Kyosho made the USA-1 up until at least 1998. Wish Kyosho had a database like the Tamiya one.

Old style tank early model (not mine).
