Spring perch questions

Post by radioactivity »

Update...

Made a Fusion 360 model for a Kyosho platinum spring perch and now the spring clamp.
Is pa12 the most likely candidate for material?
I would think that the stresses aren't as high as most suspension parts, so the possibility of different materials might be a thought.

The upshot is a perch and clamp to fit a 12mm big bore spring on a platinum shock.
Correct springs, particularly rears, are very hard to find.

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

Nylon PA12 should work fine... That said, you must pay attention to thickness : make sure you have at least 1mm thickness for the material (I'm not sure for the first part you show in the center)...
I buy kits to build and ru(i)n them :-)

Thanks for the reply!
I did order the parts from Shapeways so we will see how they look. Free shipping made me do it.
I did go with black PA12. I just was not sure as I'm very new to any printing quirks.

The lower inner portion of the top part is only .5mm but does not support anything. It only helps locate and somewhat clips onto the shock shaft.
The hexagonal portion is the support mechanism.

Thanks again
Chuck

Well, at least you will see the result soon. As per my own experience, 0.5mm doesn't really work well for dyied parts, are they are sand blasted before being dyied, and I found it result in loss of material in that case (SLS or MJF).
That said, I'm curious to see how it goes as well...

Received the spring perches a couple weeks ago.
The finish was fairly grainy and dull but acceptable for a printed piece I guess.
Not that it makes any difference in light of Shapeways present status, the parts did not appear sand blasted nor dyed.
They were apparently printed black throughout.

Went ahead and sanded and sealed the top portion of the upper perch to try and make it more presentable.
Most of the other surfaces on the perches are either concealed by the spring or the lower shock parts.
They aren't perfect but a few inches away and they do look pretty nice.

The perches are a bit larger, to fit the 12mm springs, but not grossly oversized in my opinion.
Still remains to be determined if I use these with 12mm springs, haven't really decided.
