Javelin brushless motor fitment

Post by Ty89m »

I have a new Javelin showing up soon and I'm trying to decide on a motor setup. I see from previous builds that fitment for motors with the direct solder tabs (which is most by the looks of things) can be a bit tight with the motor guard and cage. Would the Kyosho 240 15.5T BL be a safe bet due to the tabs facing the end bell vs. the shaft? It's the Kyosho recommended BL setup. The other option is the cheap and easy Justock 13.5 combo, but I'm worried about the aforementioned fitment issues.

For those running a BL setup in your Optimas/Javelins, what are you using?

Thanks!

My Optima has run motors from Hobbywing, Tekin, Thunderpower and Trackstar. Not had a problem with the wiring, but I know others have. You do have to be really neat with your soldering, and I have gone over it with a Dremel to grind it down flatter if needed. Run the 51T spur gear designed to change gearing for brushless use and this will move the motor forwards giving you a bit more clearance under the guard. I have seen others take the easy way out and cut the side of the guard back to give more space to attach the wires while in the car.

The Kyosho motor has been designed for this, the reversed tabs does move them outside of the guard so it's simpler to fit.

That is exactly what I was after; thank you.

I dug the Optima out when I was looking for something else, and realised why I haven't had any problems fitting any motor into it. It's an original motor guard and after years of use it bears no relation its original shape any more. The indent on the upper surface of the guard is supposed to be below the screw hole for the Javelin cage. I might have to straighten it a bit before it's next race meeting.

I remember having the same question when assembling the Javelin... with the OTW126 spur gear it's not an issue anymore. You may refer to my Javelin and Turbo Optima threads if you want more information...
Another solution would be to use a brushless with contacts set on the rear side of the motor, just like Tamiya brushless motors...
I buy kits to build and ru(i)n them :-)

I grabbed the Le Mans 15.5T as they're such nice-looking motors (and it's a good match for the shocks). I've yet to add a Tamiya BL into the mix, but might give one a try one of these days as they're pretty inexpensive when ordering from Japan.
