Replica MIP Gearbox (Sort of)

Post by 1300GT »

Here's some pics of a cool project I just finished. It's based on an early MIP gearbox. It uses two pieces of G10 for the sides, one piece of acetal for the centre spine and another G10 plate for the motor mount. The bearings are 8x5mm flanged.

The pieces.

And assembled with two tamiya gears and a Thorp diff.

And the other side.

Just got to make up some mounts for it now and then find something to put it in. :D
Chris.

Thanks fellas.

Dan, I drilled out the acetal and then finished taking out the rest with Dremel sanding drums. The drums are the longer 3/4" ones with the thicker shafts. This was all done in a bench drill press.

Thanks Don. That's pretty much what I had in mind for this one. Just got to duck down to the hardware store for some aluminium angle.

I certainly will Jerzi, just as soon as I make the mounts.

Nice drill press machine work. I'm hoping to one day get some nice tools to be able to make custom stuff.

The local hardware store has angle that's 1.4mm/.055" thick. I'm going to use two of the screws for mounting as the gearbox will be angled back 30 degrees to lower the CG. That'll do the job nicely I reckon.

Thank you sir. Sounds like a similar plan to mine.

Finished the mounts today. I'll drill the mounting holes to bolt it to a chassis when I decide what it's going in.

That's some beautiful finishing work Chris. As someone who likes to make stuff I appreciate the quality of your parts. Good job, I look forward to seeing some of your stuff next time you come down.

Thanks RJ. I should be down that way in a couple of months. Just waiting for tax time.

I'll bring it with me as well as the 4WD project.

Hi Chris,

Wow, that is some really good work for just using a drill press and a dremel.

A+ go to the top of the class.

I like making stuff as well.

Cheers, Dave. :)
