MIP Gearbox rebuild help....

Post by CON2 »

Hi everyone,

I got a MIP gearbox in a box of bits from Felabay a while ago and I'm wanting to use it on the "plank".

Last night I stripped it and amazed all metal gears, plus ball diff, BONUS!!
Never knew anything about these before hand.

Anyway, black as the ace of spades on the inside, got it all stripped, cleaned, ball bearings and all!
Really, really smooth now, it actually spins......

Problem is, I don't know how to open the diff.....
I tried the smallest allen key I have and that didn't fit, the holes so small I can't see what I actually need to open the dam thing up!
Any ideas, I've searched and found nothing, found some docs and reviews on how good it is, plus a few people using them, but no rebuild info.

It's the same box as this one: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=15210

Can anyone help??

Did you click on the pictures to enlarge them? I doubt you'll get a response from him he's kind of been persona non grata around here for quite a while.

2mm also works, the 2 sizes are within a few thou's of each other.

2mm?? Not got it in front of me, but that seems far too big for the diff screw?
I've got 1.5mm for pinions and that won't fit it.....

Got a 5/64 on order, so fingers crossed!!

You have taken those 3 small screws out and removed that outer (stub) already right? If not, a 2mm or 5/64 L-shaped allen key will be the only thing that will fit through that tiny hole in the (stub). The only other size I can think of that it *might might* be is .050, but that's way too small for a differential bolt, unless the head is a weird one-off tiny hex. I highly doubt that though. Post a couple of pictures, that'll help.
