Some Igarashi Motors

They're not mint examples but I got my first three Igarashi based motors in a lot this week. A Leisure Mod motor, a stock Trinity that a previous owner opened, and a Bolink that's seen better days.

The Leisure Mod is the most interesting. Hand-wound, bearings, and I think some timing added. Also, I don't know how significant it is, but most Igarashi motors I've looked at have cast plugs at the pinion end and this case looks like it was specifically stamped to hold a bearing.

Unfortunately one of the mounting holes has been enlarged to something like a 6-32 screw so I'll have to drill and tap new mounting holes to use it. Or, if there's nothing special about the case, the other option I'm considering is using the Bolink motor for parts to rebuild it. The Bolink has a cracked end bell and makes awful noises when it spins. I might be able to scavenge the brushes out of the Bolink too, as the one's in the Leisure are worn and damaged.

They're some cool examples you have. I really like the old Igarashis too.

What I find most interesting about them is how far they could be pushed to make more power.

Unfortunately, most mint examples command a high price.

Opened the Bolink up to see what was causing it to screech like nails on a chalkboard but didn't really find anything seriously wrong. I was actually surprised at how nicely wound the armature was. I was expecting sloppy machine winding like the Trinity but it's really more like the Leisure mod. The Bolink is a higher turn single though...the Leisure is a double and I'm thinking, based on the smaller bulk of the copper, also a lower turn.

Tried putting the Bolink arm in the Trinity can and it still screeches a little...though not as bad. The Trinity arm doesn't screech in either can.

Any ideas of what might be going on? The Bolink arm's stack hasn't been drilled at all so might the noise be caused because the arm isn't balanced?

I think there's something wrong at the top of the comm and that's what's making the noise. The plastic shims at the top of the shaft are even getting chewed up.

Sounds like defective/loose bearing/bushing at the endbell?

Yeah the bushings are loose. The blue Bolink endbell is cracked around the bushing so it moves a lot. The bushing in the white Trinity endbell moves a little too but that's more poor design than physical defect.

The small bushings in the end bell aren't flanged and are only held in place by a thin copper push-on retaining ring. Not very secure at all. Seems like an odd choice since a flanged bushing could've fit fine and worked a whole lot better.
