Good Source for Metal?
anyone have a good website where you can buy metal? aluminum, steel, etc..
I know onlinemetals.com and mcmaster.com come to mind for everyone.. but honestly they are a HUGE ripoff.... I put together a order tonight and after i was getting a $400 order together, and seeing shipping would cost $75 dollars.. i canceled the order.
I know home depot has a decent section of steel and some aluminum rods and bars and such.. and K&S sells hobby sized metal... But there has to be a cheaper source/way to get some metal...
I live in Long island/new york.. and i goto NJ/PA/CT/Bronx/Westchester Etc all the time, so if anyone knows a local place.. that would be great.. the few that i found and called... all required a minimum order of $500 but they were extremely cheap the way the metal should cost..

Try searching for a Metal Supermarket (chain store), they usually have everything but I'm not sure on a minimum order. Also, Fastenal is another chain that has lots in stock (depending on the store) and can get in just about whatever you need (again, not sure on minimum orders though).

.125 thick steel bar, 2" wide, length i can cut to size..
.1 to .125 steel, 1" wide, length again i can cut..
stainless prefered on both.. but regular works fine too for me since once its powdercoated and cleaned with naval jelly, not too worried about rust.

Re: Good Source for Metal?
Check with local sheetmetal shops, specifically those who do architectural metalwork. I get all kinds of tasty things from mine. I've also go specialty metal dealers (look in yellow pages ) that have lots of things to make you drool. And I recently found a place that I've known about for years, but until Friday had never been there, and that's a place called Blue Collar Supply. I don't know if they're a chain or not, but my local one has all kinds of bolts and fasteners and a huge selection of metals in all shapes and sizes. Check the phone book under metals, hardware, and similar search terms. You might be surprised what's available locally.
