hydrogen peroxide, am I missing something?

Post by spennyy2k »

So after reading the threads I found on Google my trx1 was left to soak in some 6% hydrogen peroxide in a jar. It's been in there for almost a week and there doesn't seem to be much or any improvement. It's sat on the window sil inside and when I'm home I put it in the back garden for some direct light tho it is mostly cloudy atm. Do I need a stronger mix or re clean the parts and give them another soak in fresh hp?

It needs heat first and foremost, and the UV from sunlight also helps.

When I want to whiten parts quickly, I'll throw them in 30% and warm it to ~170F for 1-2 hours.

You need the sun, and I find, heat as well.

I did this last weekend, there was way too much overcast. I left it outside for 2 days straight or so and I could see a noticable difference. I didnt have additional head but I'd say direct sunlight definitely plays a part in it working. I remember a thread somewhere that advised against anything over 3% or it would eat at the part. I have no clue if thats actually true but I dont know where to get anything over 3%.

I know most parts are made of nylon but I noticed certain parts would not lighten at all after a few days. Maybe there is a slight varient in the materials.

Summer is coming so 90-100 deg days are only a month or two off so I'll see if some heat helps the process.

I tried the UV lightbulb thing but got absolutely nowhere. I had it under constant light for a week or so straight and nothing happened.

No, stronger solutions don't hurt the parts. 20-50% stuff can be found at beauty supply shops. I have not seen anything stronger than 50% anywhere.

UV or UVB? From my research on this site you need to make sure it has the "B" as thanks the critical ray needed to activate the peroxide. Again, going from what I have read but it would be helpful to know if those that are having trouble are using the UVB or just a UV

I'm wondering if the window has any thing to do with it. Some modern windows are designed to block a lot of uv.

That's why I've been putting it outside when I'm home during the day

just realized the problem. You're in the UK. No sunshine there. :D

IDK maybe this would help. I put my parts in a larghish clear bin and set up mirrors to direct light right on the parts. While being outside.

Though I have yet to get results like some of the other people here. Better but not as good as what I have seen here.

Yeah there has been a lack of sunshine here for the last 1000 years or so. I tried to source a lamp to use locally but no luck yet

I thought stronger solutions can make the parts chalky, heat definately makes a difference as it opens the pores of the nylon. Also using a BBQ tray or making a tin foil dish helps collect the rays.

I find leaving them outside on a full or near full moon makes a difference too.

Remember too peroxide is sensitive to light and can go off (reason it's stored in dark bottles). Might try getting some fresh stuff and trying again.

Also many people over whiten parts which looks wrong. Should be more ivory then white.
