Avaliable lower profile LiPos to fit our old chassis?

Post by DerbyDan »

My first ever LiPo was a gold TrakPower 3600mah 25c pack, but despite being retired from powering my modern touring car its led a busy life since powering all of my vintage racers (Losi XX, XXT, JRX2 & my Worlds RC10) Simply because its the only LiPo battery that I've ever owned that is slim enough to slide into the chassis & be captured at the rear by either the chassis or the bulkhead.

Unfortunately this old battery will eventually die & has also been long discontinued, so I wondered if anyone out there has found a supply of suitable LiPo batteries that fit into our old vintage buggies & that are still avaliable? Perhaps we could formulate a list that could be posted in the 'Modernising our Vintage RCs' 'sticky' thread?

These are good for just about anything that would fit old stick packs. Especially helpful with old Tamiya vehicles. A couple of other companies make a similar pack.

a little more capacity

EDIT: That second one is discontinued now that I look closer, but I think most companies make at least one battery in this configuration now. I was really happy to see them become available. :D

You might doublecheck the thickness, but I think this will work as a 3s option just in case you want to destroy a car( )... once it's back in stock.

Here is another option; I'm using these for my Kyosho Optimas, which need a vintage size & shape: Gens Ace 2S1P 4000 mAh, it's even cheaper than the Associated ones @ Tower with lower capacity:

Traxxas 7.4V 4000mah LiPo [2841], fits perfectly in a stock RC10 or JRX-2.
They are a bit pricey, but good quality / long run time.

They won't fit every vintage RC car though, as they have squared edges. Many cars from back in the day need a battery pack with an oval-shaped cross-section. The RC10 is a bit different, but I figured it was necessary to clarify this.

I have a thunder power 5300 in my RC10, fits in the rear bulkhead... Have to use a battery cup with front part cut out though. It will last 36 minutes with a 17.5. (Yes I know for sure on the time) :)

All great suggestions, thanks everyone 8)

@ Reggie - are those SMC batteries still avaliable? They don't seem to be listed on their own website?

I like the idea of the packs that reasemble the old Nicad/Nimh stick packs with the radiused edges - as I could also use those in my Tamiya Mini & Clodbuster!

If your willing to cut the end of the battery cup, Venom Lipo's will fit. It fits up against the servo mounting block. Below is a pic of a Venom Lipo in my WOIN world car.

Neat electrics install there Chris! 8) It seems the majority of the LiPo packs are 'too long' compared with the NiCads of old, but in my RC10 & JRX I've used the AE battery cups which have a nice large flat base to stick them down further forward than originally intended - I use 3M VHB tape which is super strong. The XX buggy was designed so that the battery pack can be moved forward or back as a tuning aid so there's no problem with the pack length, although the battery height & shape is perhaps more critical because of the ridges either side of the recess restricting how low the modern size LiPos sit down - again the rounded sided packs are better suited here.
