Thin tubing is available. I did the same thing with some traxxas bellcranks.

Your Traxxas bellcrank mod is where I remembered seeing the tubing used. I tried out the Traxxas bellcranks and formed a tube out a thin piece of aluminum sheeting that roofers use around chimneys. Worked pretty good.

i run that same steering setup and i use the 4-40 screws that you have in the pic and it works fine. I got them off another gold pan i got a while back and I figured it was how it was ment to be. lol.

Still need to track down that thin tubing to do the bellcranks the right way, but here she is mostly finished. Will wire it up when I locate the orange Novak steering servo to match. Go to my gallery for several more pictures of the buggy.
