RC10L Project

Post by Phin »

One of the builds I considered for my metal Thorp 6-gear transmission was a pan car conversion similar to the Agi-Jammer or Hyperdrive kits, however while doing some learnings about pan cars (I have never owned or had experience with one)
a very interesting thread on rctehc.net inspired my to instead start with an RC10L and see what I could build off of a pan car.

This RC10L I picked up last week will be my starting point. It looks a proper mess but after decontamination all the important bits turned out to be in excellent condition.

This will be a long term project that will progress with no determinable pace or goal. Some elements take inspiration from pro10 cars other elements from touring cars, but it is not my objective to compete with those cars, redesign the pan car, or even invent a new class of cars. I simply have a few ideas I think would be neat to try out....the stuff that works will get posted...the stuff that doesn't, no one but me will ever know about.

First up...the front suspension:

Nice car, with some nice parts, like the Cheetah front end and the HPI lower pod plate, although it is dirty it may be a composite craft piece as well (The lower rear pod plate that is).

Yup pretty much stock woven cf RC10L besides the Cheetah front and lower pod....which I don't know, is there a way to tell the difference between an HPI lower pod and a CC one?

Wheels were Bolink...they obviously need new foams but the rims are in good shape.

One is woven carbon fiber with a clear weave and the other is graphite? (not sure, the HPI chassis and top plate are woven CF so I assume the bottom plate is also like that)

Here's a pic of the lower plate:

There looks to be a weave pattern under a matte black finish. It doesn't have the typical carbon fiber look, with clear coat finish and contrasting weave pattern, that the top plate and chassis has.

I think it is Composite Craft, as it also has the same lighter middle layer that my 10LSS CC lower plate has, but don't quote me on that...

My lower pod plate looks exactly like the one in the 6th photo of the RC10L in this thread: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=21766

...which scr8p identifies as an HPI part in the second post there.

hpi actually had them in the above matte black, as well as a woven carbon fiber version. i can honestly say i have only ever seen one or two that were woven, and i had one of them. obviously they made more than that, i'm just sayin.......

i'm pretty sure i sent it off to sofaking a little while back. i don't think i took a pic of it before it did, so if you feel like taking one and posting it dave, feel free.

the only aero-type lower pod i remember coming from composite craft is the one that went along with their ground effects chassis. the one that flaired out on both sides...... almost like a bumper. not saying they didn't have another version, it's just the only one i can kinda picture in my head.

drbelleville has a pic of a CC lower in this thread, about mid-way down.

I remember seeing a pic of a woven CF lower plate like the HPI/CC too but I can't find where it was. :x

Are those for foams or for their Road Hawg tires?
