figured I'd show you guys my new and spiffy belt cutting capability. I picked up 9mm belts from SDP-SI as I mentioned earlier, which we all know are too wide.

So I figured when they cut belts to width, all they have to be doing is jigging a cutting blade so that the blade will cleanly slice the belt in two. Since I got my lathe up and running, I wheeled up a couple 'pulleys' out of some scrap material, along with an idler arm and axle to attach to my carriage stop/indicator bracket. Then I made a razor blade attachment for my quick change toolpost.

the results speak for themselves 8)

oh, since the belts are pretty fragile when subject to a sharp implement like a razor blade, I left the lathe in neutral(belt tension off) and just spun the chuck by hand to take it slow and easy. no sense in turning a brand new belt into shreds in an instant if something is awry.....

oh, and the black 'washer' looking thing on the idler pulley is an old servo horn that worked perfectly to keep the belt from rolling off the pulley. The indicator clamp is all hand made(the part holding the idler arm to the lathe bed), and as such, it's off a tiny bit, making the belt want to wander off the idler.

Dude that is absolutely awesome. Great thinking there man.

BTW I got one of these belts and I must say you cannot tell the belt was cut and it looks perfect in every way.

Excellent work man.
