my old and new gold tubs

Post by 3beancrispy »

I decided to dig out my old RC-10 to clonk around the yard and such alongside my son, who got a duratrax buggy for the holidays. I think the last time i ran it was 1991, it was torn down and stored since then. I had never contemplated how horrible my modification skills were as a teenager until i started to put it back together. a trip to the hardware store for a couple (wrong) screws and it's back on the road. Took advantage of an empty bay @ work for some indoor wintertime running and, despite slick off road tires all around , we both had fun sliding around and doing some mild jumping. broken ball end put an end to it all !
so i decided to buy some parts, or a parts car, on ebay to compliment what was salvageable from mine. fortunately all the electronics function well. I ended up with a really decent car for a lot less than i would have expected to pay, so decided to complete it and find different parts to fix up mine. i see a familiar vicious cycle starting. the last time it occurred was with vintage honda motorcycles, but that's a whole 'nother story. onto some pictures ! will start with the OG, then the new project, then the current status on each. all comments and humor welcome !

seems like it, much lighter gold than on my old caddy, a stamp on top and bottom. i'm sure most here know better than me hehe.
it actually looked pretty normal with the lid on, it's what's revealed when the velcro was unleashed that was scary. I nabbed a black tub chassis ( no clue what model it's from ) from the 'bay and have started to build onto it. the black with white arms and red towers is an interesting look!

Personally, I think that there is a real appeal to trying to keep your original crazy concoction together, making whatever repairs/changes are necessary without altering the character of the build ... it is a great snapshot of your own personal r/c adventures and of the essence what the hobby has been for so many people.

As you can attest, picking up equally battered parts cars to make a runner is not overly difficult, but you'll never be able to go back and be a kid and come up with anything as personal and authentic as that car ... although I am guessing that the front end is pretty flexible with the walls of the tub removed ... and maybe the back end too ...

agree wholeheartedly, but i am fearful that the back or nose will be easily crumpled and then it won't hang nearly as well on the wall of shame. I can't help but laugh looking at it , also wondering how it had never been bent BITD. mostly raced it on carpet ovals in the winter then back to buggy mode in the summertime. lots of long jumps down friend's steep driveway, even had it run over by a chevette ! ( we were racing, i had been winning ... )

snapped a few quickies at lunchtime , they show the original chassis, the rebuild 'mockup' , and the old body atop the mockup. the only thing missing, to get the full effect, is the quite large bud's racing wing painted orange & black, missing side dams, and attached via homemade wire - seemingly bent without using hands. enjoy ! hopefully it makes ya'll chuckle as much as it does me :)
