B3 wheel selection help (sport to team/CDV change)
JK Racing and I pm'd about this but I want to be sure I understand. I have this RC10B3 I got on craigslist (the sport B3 setup) and I converted it to bearings. I ordered the standard bearing setup which was for the team car but didn't realize I needed different size bearings for the rear if you don't have CDV's. It still has the stock wheels and tires on it.
So I want to make sure I have this right. If I keep the stock rear axles these are 1/4" and other wheel options would include the Thunder Tiger Phoenix BX wheels, right? If I do the CDV changeover, then this will give it 3/16" rear axles and then what wheel options do I have? Will I have the same axle size for the B4, B44, and other modern buggies increasing my wheel choices?
The front wheels I'm assuming are standard modern 2.2" configuration (whatever that is?) so other modern wheels like for the B4 will fit, right?

Re: B3 wheel selection help (sport to team/CDV change)
Even if and when you convert to 3/16 you still have the B3/B2 rear wheel as your only option, the B4 does use a 3/16 but a different offset than the car you have, so by running the B4 wheels you would be binding from the wheel hitting the rear hub and the lower suspension mount. The front is also a deeper offset, and you will likely have clearance with the B4 wheels-it will narrow the car up a bunch-

So if I switch to the cdv's, ignoring B4 wheels, should I just check the wheel offsets in the stats and does it say "fits 3/16" axles" or something so I can figure out what will fit?

Re: B3 wheel selection help (sport to team/CDV change)
if you stick with the 1/4" axles, you can use the JC racing wheels on Ebay for 2.2" wheels.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Associated-RC10-wheel-set-/180575149748?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item2a0b1e1eb4
they come in three colors.
if you convert to the CVD, and use the 3/16" axle, then you would need non-sport B2/B3 wheels. Thunder tiger has equivalent ones, but I don't know the exact part numbers.
duratrax wheels, as described in the 'how to put 2.2" wheels on your rc10' thread. come in a bunch of colors.

what if you change hubs and knuckles to t4/b4 stuff?Charlie don't surf wrote:Even if and when you convert to 3/16 you still have the B3/B2 rear wheel as your only option, the B4 does use a 3/16 but a different offset than the car you have, so by running the B4 wheels you would be binding from the wheel hitting the rear hub and the lower suspension mount. if you change your rear hub carriers to t4/b4, you are able to use B4 rear wheels as long as you use B44 rear CVD's. Doug (EauRouge) used these on his last build. The hub needs to be drilled or reamed out to 1/8" for the suspension pin.

I just got these rear B3 hubs so I don't think I'll be going the B4 hub route.

Re: B3 wheel selection help (sport to team/CDV change)
Alright, I ordered up two sets of Duratrax wheels from Tower and went to convert the CDV's last night and....... they don't fit. The axle won't fit through the hole in the wheel. And I tried the old stub axle that came on my Sport B3 and it doesn't fit the Duratrax wheels either (hole is the right diameter but the taper of the axle that gets larger in diameter by the drive pin won't fit inside the Duratrax wheel hub, see picture above). Not sure if I'm explaining this right, but the point is they don't work.jwscab wrote: if you convert to the CVD, and use the 3/16" axle, then you would need non-sport B2/B3 wheels. Luckily I'll be doing an old is new gold tub project so these wheels won't go to waste but I'm lucky that I got a set of the white B3 rear wheels on ebay which fit the 3/16" axle on the MIP CDV.
Re: B3 wheel selection help (sport to team/CDV change)
can you use a counter sink drill bit to open it up a touch to fit?

Re: B3 wheel selection help (sport to team/CDV change)
the duratrax ones will only fit on the 3/16" axles. not the tapered 1/4" axles that were stock.
they might need a slight ream to get them to fit over the 3/16" axle.
if you are trying to run a 2.2" wheel on the tapered 1/4" axle you need:
-jc racing wheels from the UK(ebay)
-b3 'sport' wheels.
Unless you modify anything else, they won't be a drop in replacement.

I'll take a picture to show but they didn't fit when I tried, surprised they would need to be drilled out.jwscab wrote:the duratrax ones will only fit on the 3/16" axles. not the tapered 1/4" axles that were stock.

Yes,
The duratrax wheels are extremely tight and will fit if you force them. I just reamed them out and they slid on and off easily. I also have a set on a runner I sold awhile back that I forced on and they are still like that. Over time of taking them on and off they loosened up to slide on and off easily for the current owner.

Re: B3 wheel selection help (sport to team/CDV change)
Good to know now! I was worried, but thanks. Confirmed this tonight. I got the slightest step up drill bit I could locate and reamed them a tiny bit, and they slid right on with no excess play. Went ahead and mounted up new JC Concepts tires and added glue, I'm ready!jwscab wrote:my next line mentioned that the need to be reamed. I think they are really 5mm.
thanks, sorry for the false alarm.
