Decent inexpensive brushless motor for a newbie?

A brushless newbie, that is... I just snagged an LRP AI Brushless Pro esc on the bay and was curious of a decent motor on the cheap. Probably a 13.5T or 15.5T at the lowest. Still haven't nailed down the kv equivilents. It'll probably go into a TC4 or I'll shoehorn it into my 12L4. [dumb question] Do/can brushless motors use standard pinions?[/dumb question] I have a handfull of Robinson aluminum pinions, are these suitable or do brushless require something stronger? What says you?

Hey Smitty, I'm kind of in the same boat. I just walked into the hobby shop with no clue about brushless. I bought a 6.5 novak havoc set and put that in a tc5. From what I have read in the pamphlet that came with it, normal pinions are fine but you shouldn't gear it the same as a brushed motor. Apparently it needs smaller pinions other wise it could overheat the esc/motor. The other thing I read was that no matter what the gearing is, operating temperature is very important. Keep it at optimum temp and everything will be okay, above that and bad things happen (I guess). So I'm hoping that someone with more experience with this can enlighten us more...

I was think'n + in pinon size, as compared to = brushed motor, if that is whay i understand, and yes, watch your temp. close. That 6.5 is a hot motor. I think,your ESC should have therm. shut down. Might want to check out AE forums for info also.
Do you have a temp. gun?

I have the AI with the 13.5 turn LRP brushless on my 870c and it is fine. Quick motor. There is also the Reedy combo kits that can be had for cheap coin as well. The AI sensored system will only work with the LRP sensored motors I believe.....

Ahh, I see. Well that really narrows it down a bit, lol. I know LRP says they recommend the Eraser or Vector motors with the AI but wasn't sure if it was etched in stone. I thought about trying one of the black Reedy motors, but they are unsensored and I'm not certain they'd work. Besides, for just a bit more I can get an Eraser or a Vector sensored and know for sure, So that's probably what I'll do. I got a ways to go on my TC4 buildup so I'm in no hurry. I just sniped the AI on ebay on a whim to dip my toe in the brushless waters, so it should be fun leaning new tech.

I bought the combo set at on of my lhs'. Also, check the specs on the AI system, they tell you how low you can go with the "turns". I think the one I got I can go to 10.5, but I think any faster than the 13.5 I have in it I will just wreck the car....

Yea, I'm fine with the turns. I think the one I got goes down to 8.5....which is way too fast for me. I'm gonna start at 15.5 or maybe 13.5 at the lowest. I'm already not that great of a driver, I don't need balistic speed to destroy my car even more.

For the AI/LRP, its not fast out of the hole, its just steady fast. My Yoke goes just a smidge faster than my son's Rustler with a stock set up and the 8 cell battery. I run Venom hard case 4200 mah saddle pack battery with it.
