Building a Yokomo YZ10 in 2022 - Help

Post by goncalopimenta »

Hello everyone,

I recently joined this forum after being suggested so by a facebook group. I've been looking at sales groups etc recently for a Yokomo 870C/YZ10. I'm quite in love with the shape of the car and the simplicity of the engineering so I would like to have one to add to my collection - problem, cars for sale seem to be very few in between and, if they appear, they are exepensive, same thing with original spare parts.

This got me thinking - would it be possible to buy a Yokomo YZ10 in 2022 exclusively from hop ups/recretion parts from people around the world?

Has anyone tried this before? Maybe not 100% according to the original spec as I can imagine the diffs, pulleys might be difficult to recreate but, for example, bulkheads addapted to run more modern gear?

Is anyone aware of something similar? Somewhere where to start looking?

Hope this is a sensible question and looking to get a discussion going!

Thank you very much!

It is possible to build a yz10 (870c to works 93) from a donor yr4 touring car.
Wheels ,arms, driveshafts, wheel adaptors and a wing can be bought from jc racing.
Then the shock towers, top deck and chassis can be bought from fibrelyte.
The bodyshell and undertray can be bought from penguin. Then turnbuckles, some big bore shocks and bulkhead caps can be sourced.
You will need to use the bulkheads hubs, hub carriers and diffs from the yr4 and can sell the rest of the touring car bits.
I did something similar for my yz10 although I have probably missed something though
Also, if you spend big money you can buy a trickbits slipper and other parts to make it more modern spec.

Hey Ryan, thanks for the reply! It's always good to get feedback from someone who's done it before :D :D . That looks like the way to go, there seem to be quite a lot of YR4 models though, I'm guessing the YR4 you are mentioning it's the first one from 1993 and not the YR-4 II or YR-4 M's.

Also, I can't find anything about trickbits, is that a nickname for something? Sorry for my lack of knowledge

Trickbits are on Facebook. Are you in the vintage yokomo groups?
Also I think that it is the early yr4s. Although, I would need to check.

Hey Ryan,

Thanks for the suggestion, just found them on Facebook, they look like quality parts! I will take some time to find out how feasible this project is and think about it.

I will keep an eye for YR4s for sale and pick one up if one appears - they seem to be much more accessible than the YZ10s ahaha.

Thanks for the time and the helpfull replies!

hey Ryan,

As look would have it, after I posted this a few days later a nice YZ10 was posted on the local classifieds and I picked it up for a nice price.

I think it looks like a YZ10 Super Dog Figther from 1994.

It seems to be in very very good condition.

Can you help me confirm what it actualy is?

Thank you!

@RyanTQ10 I actually think I prefer the looks of the pre 94 cars with the bulkhead in front of the shock tower :D but this one appeared and it looked so good I couldn't say no. I guess I'll keep my eyes peeled for a pre-94 to show up. I'll eventually take it appart for cleaning and then a soft restoration. The front bumper is cracked and the shocks are slightly stiff. Everything else seems fine though, this car only appears to have been used a couple of times.

@Retro rc can you explain to me what the TCS is?

Thank you!

We can trade cars if you want  As I prefer the later cars and have a works 91

The TCS is basically a slipper
