My Tamiya Manta Ray TRF project in 2025

Post by TokyoProf »

This is my ongoing project with my Tamiya Manta Ray. My focus has been on trying to get the look right for a very unique buggy design. It's a fun challenge to make it look less toyish and more modern and racing oriented.

Back in the mid nineties, my buddy ran a Manta in the 4wd class at our local track. It was actually a decent 4wd car with updated rubber, electronics and adjustable turnbuckles. However the achilles heel of the car was always the Tamiya plastic pinion adjustment ring. Just couldnt handle the power to keep up with the YZ-10's and Lazers.

Looks great!

The plastic or classic class at vonats is predominantly won by manta ray variants. Torque tuned motors make them quite quick. They are for the most part reliable. The aftermarket aluminum motor mount is key, along with the touring car gears to replace the super soft internal aluminum gear.
