Jamie Booth Manta Ray build from the start. Cancelled.

Post by Synergy »

I've been wanting to build a replica of Jamie Booth's GB Championship winning Manta Ray (as seen in the below article) to go with my Jamie Booth Astute for a few years now but for some reason other project have always taken precedence, now seems to be the time :)

Thanks to Terrysc for the link :D

I know I'm not going to be able to get some of the one off Tamiya parts used but as long as I can capture the essence of the car I'll be happy.

I'm interested to learn more if anyone has any addition infomon on this car, I do know that it runs a special cut Mad Cap body.

Currently I have no parts so this is most definitely a build thread from the start, unlike most of my other threads

YES! Really looking forward to seeing this build 8) I always love seeing the Tamiya cars modified from their hobby origin to a fully fledged race car :D

Still jealous of your Booth Astute, got any spare Hi-Caps you wanna send my way

Fakiee I haven't got a single set of Hi-Caps to my name, I'm going to have to go hunting myself.

I think I might backward engineer this one from a Top Force rather than starting with a Manta Ray

Update 19/06/2011 :-

In response to Tamiya's stance and attitude towards the vintage reproduction market I have decided not to continue with this project or any other future Tamiya project.

I'm confused :? Did they just announce legal action against the hobbyists who have kept the cars going with repros or something?

I don't think you should let Tamiya ruin what would have been an awesome build! But I don't blame you for taking this stance. Shame because I know this was going to be a great build :(

That's a shame but I do understand how you feel. Shame on Tamiya.

Good for you Mark, I applaud you for your conviction on the matter- My internal comedy meter is pegged seeing how Tamiya ripped off a friend of mine over a design for monster truck, then they copied the TC3 Ruona car, then the B4 and B44 etc. Yet the "evil" guys that couldn't make 1k per year off those decals are the bad ones.

I don't understand why anyone would be upset at someone who's protecting their intellectual property. The funny thing about this is now the reproduction guys are having their "work" reproduced and now they are getting bent. What goes around comes around.

Instead of giving up, why not do it right and get some real vintage decals or whatever you need? I guess you weren't into the project that much from the start eh?

I know, a vintage car with vintage parts, doesn't seem right, I'm the crazy one.

At what point can a kid today get into this hobby.

Unfortunately the demand for these parts is at it's height.
Why in the world would 'a kid today' get into this hobby with a Top Force?
