My dad's rc300

Post by aconsola »

Dad came to visit today for my daughters birthday. Last time he visited he got to see the baja and the rest of my collection and decided to try to get his old rc cars running. After getting frustrated trying to find parts for the rc300, he bought an MGT. He has also gotten his rc10 back to a running state.
Today he brought a heavy box for me, his old rc-300, the bump starter, and some spare parts. (also a 6-gear trans in a stealth box, leftover from his retrofit BITD)
The car is rather dirty, but appears to be complete.
The rear wheels have had the tires cut off, apparently due to flatspotting/dryrot and wear. There is a new pair of rough cut donuts ready to go on the wheels.
I will post pics as the cleaning progresses.
I have 2 questions(I'm sure there will be more to come)
1, can anybody point me to a tutorial on how to mount foam tires? I am not sure how to do it properly. The donuts are a tight fit on the wheels, and I can see myself getting them glued stuck halfway onto the wheels
2 What is the white sheet stuff that the bumper and radio tray are made out of? I'd like to get some of it to make some fresh parts, but I don't know what it is called or where to look for sheets of the stuff.
Thanks!

I always used a layer of first aid tape on the wheels first. it makes the tires easy to remove just cut through the tire and peal the tape new rim again. then tire glue or contact cement the inside of the tire and the tape on the rim let dry seperatly then dunk the tire in Laquer thinner and push it on fast as long as the thinner is wet the glue wont dry when the thinner evaperates the glue rehardens done. thats how we do it here in MD. just a thought. If you're not going to run it I would not even install the foams. If you are going to run it the bearrickster approach is the way to do it. If you can find a large Kimbrough tire horn all the better.

The white stuff is Kydex. Hard to find in white anymore. It does respond well to the usual cleaning treatments.

Nice piece, I'm sure taylorm and mrlexan will have things to say.

Thanks for the info on the tires guys. I don't know if I will do it, because now that i think about it, even if I get them mounted, I have no way of truing them. for now I got them onto the rims by using water to help them slide on.

I got the rear end cleaned up. The motor had disentegrated foam filter stuff all inside, so it was completely torn down, cleaned and rebuilt. everything else was either soaked in denatured alcohol, or hit with steel wool(or both)
the air filter is probably 15 years too new, but it is the only thing I had around that fit.

if you have a drill press and a block of wood wraped with sandpaper it will get you close enough for a poor mans tire truer.

I should mention that the proper white Kydex is 1/8" (.125") and should be smooth on both sides. All I've been able to find is 3/32" (.093") with texture on one side...

there are lots of places online to order .125 white kydex, but none of them seem to specify what surface texture is available. Looking at the kydex site, there are many possibilities for texture,(including smooth) so I have emailed a couple of the suppliers to see what they can get. Hopefully it will be available in something smaller than the 4x8' sheets.

I have asked around at a few online plastics vendors. none of them carry the smooth on both sides kydex. they can order it, but one place quoted me a minimum of 8 sheets (4'x8') to special order, and likely in the $250/sheet price range. I may buy some .125 textured pieces and put the textured side down

I got the final quote from 2 places both the same:
8 shts .125kydexPA 48 x 96 @$192.96/ea. not including shipping/handling
it is a non-standard item and has to be special ordered with a 4 week lead time.
