TOMY Intruder - now complete
When i was running in the 1991 Radio Race Car Series in the UK, there was a guy who ran the then fairly unheard of TOMY Intruder, the guy being called Matt Hodgson. Matthew was a great adversary of mine and we had many close races that season. I was always curious about his car but stuck with my Yokomo cars right up until the end of my racing years.
Last week I received a message off another chap i used to race in that very Series against, and he was asking whether I knew anybody who might be interested in some TOMY parts. He sent me some pictures which immediately got my attention, so i quickly decided to buy them myself and so it seems as though yet another project might be on the cards. I have a friend (James Belcher) who is the resident TOMY expert in the UK who has given me a few pointers.
In with this stash is a used by good Intruder kit box, a brand new in bag IR-85 RTC unit, which i am told is quite hard to come by, along with the main drive pulley and spare IR-88 RTC slipper clutch parts, new wheels and several other new and used goodies. There is also a brand new pair of GPM rear hubs. I would love some GPM fronts and the motor heatsink if i can find them.
Anyway, here are a few pictures of what i have in the post on the way to me at the moment - i am sure somebody will know a lot more than i do about what is included.

Re: TOMY spares haul
we had a few TOMY guys here on the board but one threw a tantrum of sorts and took all his posts down. Hopefully one of the other few guys will see this and pop up to help shed some light for you.

Nice find and pics. Well done for sharing..
Yes, a previous resident raced for Tomy in the US and had vast knowledge on th Tomy cars and even retained an EX version. I wish I had his contact details. So much knowledge lost.

Er..JamieB you are the Tomy guy. The only guy on a relentless mission over the last few years to unearth all matters of Tomy goodness.
Martin, if there is one source you need it's Jamie!

Re: TOMY Intruder - now complete
So...... nearly 12 months later and here is a built up Intruder, complete with a spattering of rare alloy hop-up goodies. I have JamieB to thank for literally every aspect of this build. He really does know everything there is to know about these cars.
It has a GPM finned motor mount and optional mount cover, full set of wishbones, full set of tie rods, front wishbone hanger thingie, shock towers, front steering hubs and matching rear hub uprights, and i have then gone for a pair of ballraced C-hubs. Driveshafts are brand new Kose items. All being red it inspired me to go for a red and black shell design which was a precursor to the Supercharge Hotshot bodyshell. You will recognise the pulsing sidestripes, and i layered the decals into that design which seems to have worked well.
I fell really lucky with the spares hauls i cobbled together to make this into a viable project, which has easily been the cheapest to date for me.
The electrics aren't quite finished yet, but there is a tiny early 90's Laser esc squeezed in there between the cells and the motor is a 1990 MG SuperMagnum boasting a ceramic armature. A rare motor for a rare car.

Re: TOMY spares haul
Rear belt guard thingie was something i made from a bodyshell off-cut based on an early 90's mag suggestion.

Re: TOMY Intruder - now complete
I must admit, all of these parts fell into my lap via an old adversary who had a box full of spares, and since I got hold of that lot I have steadily hunted for the GPM parts to get it looking how I pictured it.
In my head it is now just as I envisaged, and I absolutely love it; every time I see it I just think 'Maximillian' from The Black Hole.

Always wanted one of these so really pleased.

It's a great feeling just holding and turning them in your hands , soaked in a 30 year old dreamdinglem wrote: ↑Fri Apr 02, 2021 2:39 pmI must admit, all of these parts fell into my lap via an old adversary who had a box full of spares, and since I got hold of that lot I have steadily hunted for the GPM parts to get it looking how I pictured it.

Maximilian ( my son's name too ) from the Black Hole had the spinning blade hands of doom as recall so maybe best just pop it on the shelf to look at

Re: TOMY Intruder - now complete
Damn, that's gorgeous. Where did you source all the red aluminum-nums? I see they're from GPM, but find it unlikely that they made aftermarket alloy parts for such a niche brand as Tomy...were they for another car but luckily a close enough fit? It's very pretty!
