Shodog's HPI RS4 Pro2

Post by shodog »

Back in 1999 I bought a Pro2. I used it for years and after buying a couple of X-ray T1's I figured I didn't need it anymore and sold it on to my neighbor. I regretted selling it ever since. I have a ton of HPI bodies and other RS4 chassis and I like how the bodies can interchange between them. Recently Incredible Serious posted this one for sale and I swooped it up. It was in mint condition with very little wear on the parts. Many of the plastic parts have been replaced with aluminum and carbon fiber parts.

For the body I had been wanting to practice a two step paint process of clear red backed with gun metal. I figured it would be best to try it out the process on a inexpensive body first

I trimmed the body out and prepped it for paint.

Then I laid down a nice even coat of clear red.

Then backed it with gunmetal.

The color looks phenomenal

That's amazing. I have the same car with an NSX body. Where did you buy the light buckets for it? Can you snap a pic of how its hooked up underneath?

Shodog, great work on that, the body looks great, and I love the detail of the light buckets. That was one of my favourite chassis' to build up, but I think I'm happier to see it in your hands.

Besides, I have another one.... not nearly as much bling, but this one has the carbon non motor side rear stiffener

They may not have been the best cars but they were what was available to me. I started with an Original RS4 before upgrading to a Pro2.

I am totally amazed at how good it looks. I want to paint a Tamiya anniversary Porsche 934 body with this color and a set of these BBS wheels.

The light buckets come with the body. I fitted the light stickers on them but it would be easy enough to pop holes and add led lights to them. I'll try to snap a pic of the underside. I also have an HPI NSX body and tried to fit it to an Xray but this chassis is the only one that has a low enough profile to fit that body.

That explains why this one chassis isn't wearing a carbon rear brace. I want to go full bling on this and get the carbon transmission brace, aluminum suspension pieces and the aluminum center chassis brace

Really loved the pro2. It seemed like it kept winning and winning..wanted to buy one but my lhs carried the kawada sv10 so went with that instead. Hpi shot themselves in the foot with the pro3. I remember at my local track even the established pros were struggling with their pro3's after they ditched the pro2's ..and they seemed to regret it.

Can you still buy the aluminum bits for it online? That's a gorgeous car - you are inspiring me to do more with mine now

Quite a few of the aluminum replacement parts are still available. This chassis needs just a few more pieces to make it fully bling. I loved the pro2 when it came out and luckily my LHS supported it.

I haven't necessarily been a fan of Purple anodize but with the gun metal wheels I think it works well.

Definitely a cool looking car. I'm totally digging the battery straps and tray for the the saddle packs, I wonder if they fit the RS4 Pro?
