Would a MIP transmission rebuild thread be useful?

Post by twinrider1 »

I have an early MIP transmission that I'm going to clean and re-grease. I was thinking of taking pics and making a thread....partially to show the process but mainly to document an early piece for reference purposes. Would that be of use or is it more of a 'no shite Sherlock' waste of bandwidth topic?

Thanks,
Mike

we love pictures. even better when it's not a common assembly. I say go for it, just make the images clear, not blurry

Same as mine, I think...

Is yours made for a Tamiya SRB?

My base is different. Triangular, with a flat base and a screw hole on either side instead of one side like yours. One thing it looks like both of ours have is the top screw hole being tapped off center and breaking into the gear chamber.

It came to me mounted in an RC10-type setup. More pics coming in a dedicated thread once I get my files converted/resized.

No, they're the same, the ears on one bottom side of mine have been removed, I'm sure it originally looked just like yours. It was originally white too. I think the ears on mine were removed out of necessity for use with the Hot Trick motor plate:

Here's the Hot Trick motor plate to adapt this trans to an RC10. Under the hideous orange paint (what was I thinking 25 years ago?) Is gold anodizing that matches an early RC10 tub perfectly.

How was your MIP trans mounted in a '10?

Came to me like this as part of a garage sale find. I didn't have RCs as a kid, so this is all new for me. I'd love to see an old MIP catalog.

Ok, because of the suspension pieces, I was thinking it was an RC10-type setup. But now I don't know. The mounting holes on the MIP trans form a rectangle* but the stealth pics I've seen show mounting holes that form a trapezoid (and the 6-speed holes are rectangular, but much closer together).

So, are you thinking it's for a Tamiya originally? Or did MIP build one bolt pattern and the person had to drill for their particular installation?

twinrider, your transmission is the older one that mounts straight to the chassis. I used one just like it on my MIP baja bug

So, and sorry for being so dense, but do you mean it's designed to mount straight to a Tamiya's existing holes, or that it's a universal mount for all makes/models and you just have to drill every chassis to fit?

MIP provided a piece of fiberglass chassis plate with that bolt pattern that would bolt to the back of a Tamiya SRB chassis taking the place of the stock trans case
