Anybody build a track on just grass?

Post by Twin Detonator »

I'm going to build a track on our side hill and just keep it mowed down grass in the spring.

I'll get a roll of 250' of drain pipe and lay our track out and just mow it tight and bag the clippings so it is tight to the ground.
I hate running on thick grass because clippings get all over the vehicals and tallish grass bogs them down, but if I bag the clippings and keep it mowed tight around a 1" to the ground, it should be OK.
I'll make some wooded plywood ramps etc...

Anyone else run on this type of track???

Back in the days I had a grass-track on my property with mowed layout that I altered every other month; otherwise you will wear out the grass. Simple corners made out of pipe, 3-4f long and easy to store away.

Mine worked fine for what it was. I always planned to rent a sod cutter and take it down to dirt, but it just never happened this past summer. I'm hoping I'll be able to get to it earlier next spring. We'll see how that goes....

I had one bitd. Nothing special, just mowed into the field next to my house. No pipes or anything, but the uncut grass was so thick that you couldn't get off the track if you wanted to. Definitely not the same as having an actual groomed track, but super easy to "build" amd maintain.

Mine was originally just mowed into the yard. I had excellent traction until my buddy and I ran on it enough to wear through the grass.

Thanks for the info guys.
I don't really care if it wears through the grass to dirt. I may get a dump truck of clay for jumps or I may just use some wood and plywood for jumps and it cover with that green indoor outdoor carpet.

I got a new larger push mower with a bagger that I use for trimming around the house, before I mow with the tractor, and I can use that to mow the grass down to an inch on the track and bag the clippings so they don't gt all over the cars.

What you describe is pretty much what most off road tracks were like here in the UK.... my local off road track still run on grass & its my favourite type of surface.

These days many/most tracks over here are run on Astroturf, which is a surface that I don't quite get on with :|

I have an 80' x 60' area behind the garage that I've turned into practice track. Dropped the lawn mower down a couple notches, outlined with spray paint and built a couple plywood jumps, we have a lot of fun.

Future plans for a permanent track...

Those grass tracks look great.
You guys with those grass tracks are exactly what I want to do but with the drain pipe to outline it.
Do your cars get bogged down with the grass or do they run really well on it?

I would would mow ours down at the mowers lowest setting and bag it off so there are no clippings to get all over the cars.

I mowed my in with my big ZTR mower. I just cut from the inside to the outside and did not have to worry about grass clippings unless I went wide and then only for the day I mowed. I dropped the deck all the way down and let it ride on the scalping rollers. I really wish it was possible to keep the grass like that because traction was so easy to come by on the grass.

Look up 10585 il-142 Mt. Vernon IL 62864 if you want to see my current layout. It is very clear on google maps.
