Old school Yokomo and the newer kits....

Anyone here racing an older 'vintage' Yoke up against the newer 4wd buggys?

I'm going to start racing 4wd mod again, curious how the Yokes are stacking up. I don't see there being a huge difference, driver is 90% of it. My local track is fairly tight, not a lot of long straights, or huge jumps. I'm thinking I can still run the Yoke with those guys and do well with a brushed motor.

The way I see it cars stopped advancing in major leaps many years ago. Back in the day (1980s) every off road car was of very different designs to each other. Then it became clear which designs worked better, so companies got closer and closer in design. It was even more obvious in 1/8th circles. Every modern 1/8 buggy on sale today is a direct copy of the Burns. Back then that car was utterly unique and unlike anything else ever seen. Now you just pick which colour anodising and logo you prefer on your Kyosho clone.

Heh...I do all that now, with vintage Kyosho originals!

id say run it might want to get a brushless set up and some saddle lipos. i hate newer cars personally chinese junk in my opinion.

I thought about that. I'm not convinced I want to go brushless on the motors, but batteries I might. I borrowed a couple and they're very tough to fit in the MX-4. It's not impossible, but very tough. I'm just going to run some zippy mods and good batteries and do what I can. There's nothing more humiliating than getting beat by a 15+ yr old buggy.

Whilst I haven't raced my 870c against the modern cars it does really kick butt. Equipped with 91 arms, hubs and Teflon coated AE dampers the car is a dream to drive. Super quick, handles well and looks the goods dressed in the Japanese 870c lexan too.

The xx4 is still competitive and back in the day it was regularly beaten by YZ 10s and CAT 2000s. Make of that what you will.

Alex is right, I'm guilty of gawping at his XX4 in the BST lol, but i beat them regularly with my YZ10 BITD, albeit on smooth tracks and asphalt.
Much can be said of the performance of some of the more vintage "pro" chassis.............the TTech is still blinding quick, and is still using the same overall design from many moons ago......just don't clip a kerb lol.

A few of us had been doing that on a weekly basis with RC10's recently (one is being run at the Cactus Classic right now) awesome feeling- and....if you get smoked....you have the excuse of....its a 20year old car

See picture below which shows the evolution of Yokomo's from the works spec to present (ish) day. The major design changes occurred with the MX 4 and Bmax and the YZ 834B to YZ 870c (not pictured).

I wouldn't say the MR4 BX (worlds pictured which differs from the original) was a major design change as IMHO it is an evolution of the MX4 YMP mid motor kit.

Now your just rubbing it in Alex It is nice to see such a collection together though, i think once i have my TRF sorted, I'm putting my efforts into bagging a 91, another 94 for serious running and, an 870c now......i want more Yokes.
