Aero Streak

Post by EvolutionRevolution »

As if I needed another project...

The box is rather interesting, with a cut out in the top that can be folded up for display purposes:

Car is slightly used, with the body being worst off:

The rear wing is attached to the front of the body using two screws, and I'm not sure the body's actually made of lexan - feels like thin ABS or so. It has some cracks in it, is somewhat yellowed, and the driver needs to be painted.

The car comes mostly assembled.

Chassis:

The car has plastic bushings everywhere, and the stock shocks suck. Extremely bouncy with no damping whatsoever. Springs seem way too hard. The front shocks have two mounting points on the lower wishbone. The steering is interesting: it uses a sliding rack instead of the more conventional steering linkages. The battery tray looks lipo-ready (for a 20 yo car!), and should be able to take a squarish pack without too much trouble. The motor sits very far off-center - I wonder what effect that will have on handling. The car has four different gearing options.
The only options shown in the instructions are ball bearings, universals and optional shocks. However, the steering links can also be replaced with turnbuckles, and the rear wishbones have holes for a rear swing bar. The mechanical speed control sits on a removable plastic plate.

Plans:
- front universals
- better shocks, will probably go with the black plastic/alloy units I've left over from other projects.
- ball bearings
- steering turnbuckles
- was there ever a swingbar set for the Shadow? If not, may try making one myself.
- anyone knows whether the transmission can stand a brushless?

Looks like a Tamiya. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, though.

Nice! Kind is a salute vs turbo optima deal with the shadow and aero streak. I bet they sold a lot more of the shadow but between the two still far less than Tamiyas of that vintage. Nice score and I bet it cleans up real good 8)

Unfortunately, there's practically nothing of the Salute/Turbo Optima heritage in that car's chassis--only the body. It's plas-tastic.

Cab-forward and not ugly. The best thing about the body (besides the pilot) is the air intake that sits right where the resistor is.

I believe this is the same chassis as the shadow ... which I think has a lexan body. But it's neither easy to find nor a beauty

More stuff:
- front upper wishbones also have room for mounting a swingbar.
- assembly does not match exploded view in manual - several minor parts are different
- steel drive hexes! Unfortunately this means they're even more of a pain in the behind to remove...
- the hinge pins are held in using o-rings.
- white nylon gears and diffs, making it even more Tamiya-like.
