K1 Aero
I've always wanted an XLS but have never been willing to pay the prices that I see the XLS going for. But then I came across this K1 Aero, the great great grandkid of the XLS, for the price of 10 to 12 pizzas. I don't know what I'm doing with it, but it's really cool. I'm a little concerned though that my collection of vintage electrics aren't a good match for this car. But maybe....

Re: K1 Aero
Are we talking the Domino's $5 basic pizzas here, or a $35 family size vegan deep pan with gluten-free base?
Nice racer.... should be fun to push hard.

Re: K1 Aero
We're talking the Marco's large 2 topping pizzas. Goodness in a box.
My biggest concern is that this will be the gateway to wanting brushless motors and lipo batteries. That might be more newness than I can handle. That fancy new stuff would be a quick end to my good deal.

Re: K1 Aero
If you can run it "vintage" style, brushed with NiMh or NiCad... I say do it! If you end up in the rabbit hole with a somewhat vintage buggy, running new electronics... come find me there. That's what's probably going in MY vintage resto-rod!
Looks great... cant wait to see what you do with it!!!

Re: K1 Aero
I might end up with an unexpected use for this Cat. I picked up another good deal (cost 2 pizzas less than the K1)
and got a nice little TC3 for cruising around on pavement. My son immediately claimed my good deal TC3 (it is pretty danged entertaining) and told me I need to put some street tires on the Cat so we both have 4wd pavement drifters. I had been leaning towards 4wd truggy like my old Turbo Optima.
One question. Does anyone know of any lexan belly pan kits out there? My friend's YZ10 back in the day had one to protect the underside. I hate the thought of scarring up the underside of a nice carbon fiber chassis.

Re: K1 Aero
I believe Domino's and Marco's should never be mentioned in the same breath - same applies for Papa Johns, Pizza Hut and other pedestrian grade pizzas. Marco's is in an entirely different league. Awesome pizza!
Anyway, if you can't locate a formed undertray, you might consider buying a sheet of lexan, cut to shape, and mount it with double-side tape and/or capture with a few existing screws front and back.
I keep eyeing TC3 when they pop up on ebay. I definitely want to have one of those some day.

Re: K1 Aero
There's a nice Yokomo YR-4 2 Special on eBay that caught my eye and would be a good racing partner for the TC3, but I really need to use some restraint, get some road treads, and try out this Cat first.

Re: K1 Aero
It looks like there should be enough space to package up the chassis with my old tech stuff.
I'm thinking about trying to form an undertray from .030" sheet Lexan. If it goes well, I might get inspired to start making undertrays for all of the RC runners my son and I have. First I need a bandsaw for making my plywood pattern forms.

Re: K1 Aero
You could use some sticky back chassis protector sheet instead of making undertrays, just put 2 layers on for more protection.

Re: K1 Aero
Currently use a K1 Aero for neighborhood bashing on a road with numerous small pebbles. To keep pebbles out of the drivetrain and protect against road rash and crashes, the following parts been helpful.Frankentruck wrote: ↑Tue May 11, 2021 10:54 am It looks like there should be enough space to package up the chassis with my old tech stuff.

Based on your initial post, the following comparison of used LiPo and NiMH batteries with a brushless ESC and motor may also be of interest.

Re: K1 Aero
Thanks for the info. That gives me some additional options to consider. Are there any body options other than the standard top shell?

Re: K1 Aero
The two bodyshell options I am aware of are U5116 K1 bodyshell (appears to be the painted shell in your first post) and U5123 K1 Aero bodyshell (pictured on the box in your first post). The Schumacher website links are as follows:Frankentruck wrote: ↑Thu May 27, 2021 9:50 am Thanks for the info. That gives me some additional options to consider. Re: K1 Aero
A little progress getting this K1 built up. The battery and ESC cradles turned out pretty well (trying to avoid servo tape). I seem to have more cars than functional receivers, so I still need to get a dedicated receiver for this car. The Novak Mercury receiver that I intended to use is FM instead of AM like my controller. Oops.

Re: K1 Aero
Some new street shoes arrived for the Cat, however its no longer planned for dedicated street duty. Some new TC3 additions to the RC garage will be the dedicated street blitzers.
