SWB Optima Mid Undertray

Post by HKS_TRD »

I have been looking for a SWB Optima Mid undertray online and cant seem to find anything, does anyone make one.

I know the SWB Mid never came with an undertray from new but a friend 20 years ago once bought a secondhand Mid and it had an undertray on it that was made for the stock body.

I'm building a shelfer with a custom saddle pack shaped chassis and an undertray would tbe the icing on the cake for it

I think the Mid cars could use an undertray to keep debris out of the intervals. I could be wrong but was it TEAM BLUE GROOVE that had an undertray for this car?

I don't think TBG are around on eBay at the minute but I'm sure when the company gets back to business you could look them up.

I had a hunt online, it appears theirs has a recess for the standard chassis to rest in, however I will be using a custom chassis that has a similar shape to the LWB one. Also it only covers the central area not the front and rear gearbox extensions.
I am tempted to try a cut and shut on a LWB undertray but can see it ending in tragedy

I wish someone would knock up a mold for the original Optima line of cars too. I tried the cut and shut years ago myself with parts of lexan. Yes, it did end in tragedy

I suppose the cut and shut could be used to generate the mould but not sure if the shape would match that of the SWB body.
My friend was lucky to have that undertray on his mid!

If you know someone that could pull you a form you could try cutting out some craftwood/MDF board to fit the I.D. of the Mid shell. I'm told from this you can place on a vac former and make a mold.

A good mate did this for me years agon when i wanted an undertray for my Nikko Brat.

Sadly I don't know anyone that could do that. I wonder what it would take to get Marwan to make one. Even though my SWB Mid will be a shelfer it would be cool to have one.

I did a mold 23-24 years ago; I think I sold around 150 under trays back then in Sweden. But I never saw any one other making them. Maybe I should look up the old mold and make some more if I still have it…

Do you think you would still have mould?

Any details on the undertray you made, this sounds rather interesting!

It was a simple under tray, nothing special and it did the job keeping out the debris! I will check if I still have it next time I visit my storage room on the other side of town.

I was just thinking did it cover the entire length of the chassis and was the bottom of it flat or did it have a recess for the stock chassis, the one my friend had was flat and covered the entire chassis

I am all the way over in Australia but who knows, it may have been one of your!

It would be great if you could do a run as I imagine there are many people that would want to buy one that would make it worth your while, I know I'd get at least two

Totally flat bottom from the bumper al the why to the end of the car. If I remember correctly it was made out of 1mm thick Lexan, so you newer where it out. If I find it, I also need to fix a frame that fit my oven, find my vacuum box and buy some Lexan. So it might take some time to get my shit together.
I believe you are right; I can probably sell a handful of those undertray’s!

If its feasible you may want to start some sort of Expression of Interest thread.
The other option is maybe there is someone else you could trust with the mould to make them, though I am in no huge rush for one at this stage.

Following your description I have to say I definitely want one or three!
