JRX2 rear wheel balance/wobble

Post by sgirouard »

Just wondering if anyone else experiences(d) this. Whenever I run my JRX2 the rear tires always have had a slight wobble to them. This has happened on 2 different X2's I've owned running both the H-arm and the 5 link. Aside from the H-arms both X2's rears have been stock. Is it the universals? Any good solutions to this?

Is it the wheels wobbling or the tires? If the wheels spin smoothly but the tires wobble, the tires may have been mounted wonky. If it's the wheels that aren't spinning straight, you can investigate the hubs/CVDs.

Yeah. I was just playing around with it last night and didn't have a chance to test a better balanced set of tires. I do remember my JRX2 from the late 80's having a similar problem. I don't honestly remember how I addressed it then. Just wondering (which I figure it is) if its a me thing (ie tires out of balance) or a design fault that needs a hop up etc.

I've had issues on the back where the kingpin is sticking out a little more on one side and doesn't fit into the groove in the back of the wheel. When the nut is tightened down the wheel settles in on one side and not the other.

on an older x2, there are actually 3 reasons for the wobble:

1. Old tire design. The original tires did not have the outer bead that sits on the edge of the rim. This caused the tire to not ptoperly be seated on the rim. Leter designs incorporated the bead that solved this problem.

2. Bent pin. - The X2 had problems with the nylon lock nut coming off. Because of this, people would torque down on the nuts...and bend the pin. After doing this, the wheel may not seat stright because it also put a deeper grove in the actual wheel.

3. Bent axle - The X2's rear axles were pretty weak. I've seen several occasions where the axle would bend or even break at the hole (where the pin is inserted into). Because of this, some racers (or people that didn't drive very well  ) would heat treat their axles. The theory was to allow the molecules to align which made the part stronger.

hope this helps...
