Re: a "sandwiched" chassis?
In the 80's my first "graphite" chassis was a plastic bottom, foam center, with a thin sheat of carbon fiber for the top.

Re: a "sandwiched" chassis?
There were some crazy variations available. One had a plywood type core with carbon fiber on the top and bottom. I bought an Optima a couple of years ago with one of those on it. The chassis flexes so much, regular G-10 fiberglass would have been better and cheaper. But, hey, it was 2/3 graphite, and that meant a lot in the 80s .

Re: a "sandwiched" chassis?
It's not foam.
Graphite is a weave of carbon fibers held in place by resin (epoxy), G10 is the same resin but with glassfiber. The center is G10 and since it use the same resin the bonding between the glassfiber and carbon fiber layers is very good.
Losi, composite craft and others all used this technique to produce higly stiff yet less costly chassis.

Re: a "sandwiched" chassis?
There are both glass fiber core chassis and foam core chassis. The foam version is thicker and the center section is very white and very noticeable. In this case, I would suspect it's a foam core chassis. The glass fiber version doesn't stand out that much.

That does look like a thicker core than what I've seen. How hard is that foam? I suppose it's softer than fiberglass ... kind of seems not-the-best choice for countersunk screws.

Yep, that's a foam core. I don't know who made it. The foam is pretty stiff and yes, you had to be careful with the countersunk screws.
Re: a "sandwiched" chassis?
My TQ10 has a similar chassis. I thought it was foam too when I first got the thing. Haven't looked at it in ages; I'll have to dig it out when I go back to my parent's house. I do remember the CF "splinters" I always had to dig out of my hands though! No fun!
