Aluminum bell crank thread size??

Post by MelvinsArmy »

I'm having some troubles getting ball joints to thread in to my aluminum bell cranks. I can't seem to get the standard 4-40 ball joints to thread in to attatch my steering linkage. Anybody know what size thread is supposed to fit?

I'm pretty sure they are 4-40. the threads might be boogered up. take a long 4-40 screw and screw it in from the back side. that will help clean the threads up.

They were all 4-40 threads, but I'm wondering if your bellcranks may be for an Ultima or some other import? They might be 3mm if that's the case.

Just a guess...

Got it figured out. I took shodog's suggestion and threaded a 4-40 screw up through the bottom. I still had some troubles getting a 4-40 ball joint to thread correctly though the bellcrank, but luckily I had a NIB pair of AE 4-40 ball joints and they went in smooth as silk. Thanks guys! 8)

Already claimed my prize. A bellcrank that I can use!!

I think the ball end screws I was using were the real problem. The 4-40 went through with no problems, then the NIB AE pieces threaded perfectly. I don't know what this other brand I was using is, but they are 4-40's too. Just crappy old threads I guess.

Keep a 4-40 tap around handy for that stuff. An 8-32 doesn't hurt either.
